Military bashing by media by Asif Haroon Raja

Military bashing by media

Asif Haroon Raja

Indian spin masters in league with other adversaries of Pakistan are deeply involved in bringing a bad name to Pakistan and its premier institutions through a calculated psychological war since 2002. 9/11 had given an opportunity to India to conduct proxy war against Pakistan using Afghan soil. Covert war designed to destabilize Pakistan and force it to accept India as the regional hegemon was supplemented by massive propaganda war aimed at discrediting Pakistan and its premier institutions. Indo-US-Israeli-Western media war was buttressed by a segment of Pak media. Pak Army and ISI, the two bottlenecks in the way of their goals were made the butt of ridicule and slander.

Aysha Saddiqa wrote a highly critical book against Pak Army. Main objective of her book ‘Military Inc-2007’ was to perpetrate friction, cause dissent amongst ranks of armed forces and to encourage revolt. In her jaundiced opinion, Pak Army was the root cause of social disparity and democratic fiasco. Asma Jahangir and her types launched a defamatory campaign to undermine the image of the Army on totally fabricated charges of extra judicial killings in Swat operations. Stories like discovery of mass graves and throwing down militants from helicopters were figment of imagination. Pseudo patriots appear on TV shows and talk crap. Every article published in English newspapers on Pakistani politics portrays late Gen Ziaul Haq negatively and hold him responsible for all the ills in the society. Of late it has become fashionable to badmouth Army chiefs. Hidden objective is to discredit Army as an institution. Gen Musharraf bashing is being done with this aim in view.

Hamid Mir, the leading anchor of Geo TV has always been carrying a grudge against the ISI because his paymasters, America and India, are unhappy with this organization. Following in the footsteps of Indian policy, Mir also puts all the crimes at the doorsteps of Army or ISI. Mir had held ISI responsible for the murder of journalist Saleem Shehzad without furnishing proof. US raid in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011 was exploited to the hilt by him. Even now when he is lying in bed recuperating, in response to a TV anchors question, he retorted as to what the Army had done to safeguard its honor on May 2. He has been pursuing missing persons issue in Balochistan frenetically simply because the Supreme Court under Iftikhar Chaudhri had been showing softness towards the separatists, kidnappers and target killers and strictness towards the FC/ ISI laboring hard to safeguard Balochistan. For him, former are saints and latter devils.

India is arming its Army, air defence, navy, air force to teeth. It is purchasing latest weaponry and defence technology from the advanced world and has become the top buyer of arms from Russia, Israel, USA, Britain and France to bolster its military capability. Its defence expenditure is increasing rapidly since 1990. Military muscles are being built to cow down all South Asian States particularly Pakistan and emerge as the unchallenged regional power and a global power. The US is committed to make India a world power. India has never hid its imperialist and expansionist designs and considers Pakistan to be its arch rival and the sole stumbling block in the path of its imperialist ambitions.

Contrary to Indian military buildup, Pakistan’s defence budget is modest and has been declining rather than increasing in the last one decade. Currently it is at 5% of GDP, and 15% of national budget. India’s current defence budget is $42 billion and that of Pakistan $7 billion. Instead of getting worried about India’s massive rise in defence budget each year and its feverish rush to procure latest art-of-weapon systems, and its dangerous designs against Pakistan, India’s fans in Pakistan are worried about Pakistan’s defence budget. Some cunningly insist that armed forces consume over 80% of the total federal budget and state that defence budget should be radically cut.

Paid anchors and participants of talk shows shamelessly say that soldiers are paid to serve and die at Siachin. Hamid Mir and some other anchors and journalists are angry why a soldier deserves a plot. While the politicians, pseudo intellectuals and segment of media hate Army and miss no opportunity to degrade its image, all and sundry expectantly look towards the Army to step in and save the country from ruination. For every natural and manmade calamity the rulers and the people look toward the Army and the Army always live up to their expectations. The men of steel handle the monumental tasks with utmost efficiency and at the peril of their lives. They are relentlessly and courageously fighting the foreign trained and equipped militants in FATA/PATA and Balochistan and are continuing to fight them despite suffering over 5000 fatalities and injuries to over 20,000. Large numbers have been crippled for life.

Does Pakistan have any other force or institution which is as disciplined and effective in providing speedy help in the face of man-made and natural calamities? Whenever the frontiers come under threat, the armed forces rush to the border. Army never makes excuses of resource constraints or impossibility of the mission assigned. While it clashed with five-time superior Indian military in the 1948, 1965 and 1971 wars, and in Rann of Katch and Kargil conflicts, it faced India’s military standoffs in 2002 and in 2009 squarely. Troops deployed along the Line of Control in Kashmir are keeping Indian Army’s aggression in check since 1948. The Army is defending the Siachen Glacier for the last 30 years resolutely. Troops are fighting the militants and also occupying over 1100 isolated border posts along the most hazardous Pak-Afghan border to prevent cross border movement. ISI is resolutely facing the wrath of combined strength of CIA, MI-6, Mosad, RAW, NDS, BND since 2002 and has failed their hundreds of plots. Like in 1989, ISI’s role in forcing US led forces in Afghanistan to quit by end of this year cannot be disregarded. In fact the US military holds Pakistan responsible for its defeat.

Soldiers serving in icy Siachen and Northern Areas, burning hot deserts of Sindh and inhospitable terrain of FATA and Balochistan weren’t born there. They don’t have any personal enmity with India, or Afghanistan, or militants. They are there only for you, me and our beloved Motherland. In Siachin, temperatures in winters fall down to minus 70 degrees Celsius. It receives 6 to 7 meters of the annual of total meters of snow in winters. Snowstorms reach the speed of 150 knots. Large numbers of soldiers have contracted critical lung diseases due to lack of oxygen and lost their limbs due to frost bite. In Gyari, the entire military camp came under an avalanche in the summer of 2011 and not a single soldier survived. It took over a year’s effort to dig out their bodies and hand them to their next of kin.

Soldiers live an extremely tough and hazardous life and remain ever ready to sacrifice their lives both in peace and war. Their performance is watched and tested by hawkish seniors every year and held accountable for even a minor lapse, and at times inadvertent slip. Having given their best to the military in their prime age, over 80% retire young at the age of 40-50 years when their family obligations are at their peak. Majority remain deprived of a job making it difficult for them to lead a decent life. In comparison, their compatriots in the civil leading an easy life and indulging in all sorts of wrong practices, manage to get promoted and attain highest ranks. They retire at the age of 60 years by which time most of their family obligations like education and marriages of children are taken care of. Politicians enter the corridors of power without any moral, physical and educational training and consider it their right to milk the nation with both hands. Their slogan of sacrificing their lives for the sake of Pakistan is mere rhetoric. While living within red and green zones, they keep building walls of security around them and travel in bulletproof cars escorted by security guards. Their sole aim in life is to remain in power and earn ill-gotten wealth and groom their wards to perpetuate dynastic rule.

There are so many very young widows and tender age orphans left behind by the Shaheeds. Although the Army honors the Shuhada by holding Yaum-e-Shuhada every year, takes care of the widows and orphans and respects the Ghazis, but a well-paid small anti-Army group prefers to spew venom. It pains the serving and retired soldiers to watch the media indulging in malicious campaign and presenting a wrongful picture merely to please their paymasters. The Army and ISI in particular is lambasted despite the fact that Pak Army is rated as the best in the world and the ISI has been rated as number one among the top ten intelligence agencies of the world. The media rather than appreciating the sacrifices of the defenders of Pakistan, building the image of armed forces, and improving civil-military relations, it plays a negative role. Can anyone in India including Indian media dare demonize Indian Army, Army chief or RAW?

For the first time the people have come out in the streets all over the country in support of the Army and ISI. They want strict disciplinary action against pro-India Jang-Geo channel but the government for unknown reasons is dithering and inadvertently giving an impression as if it is supporting the media house rather than the Army. It will be in fitness of things to discipline the berserk media and bridle up Jang-Geo Group for the wrong it has been doing against Pakistan Army and ISI and particularly the calculated 8-hour program it aired on April 19 to demonize ISI.

Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus Project – Wastage of Resources

 COMMENTARY

by

Naeem Baig

The under-construction Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus Service designed by National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPak) is experiencing some teething problems in the greenbelts along the two main avenues.

The Project seems to have been launched in a hurry without conducting any Environment Impact Study as is the international practice for all mega projects.

A decade ago, I did a specialized course from University of Toronto in “Transformation Strategies”. The gist of the teaching was how to avoid wastage of existing resources while undertaking fresh developments

The speakers had mentioned umpteen times that developing countries were doing so not because their people are backward– or economies not performing well, but due to their egoistic leaders who in order to up root the work of their predecessors, waste existing infrastructural resources in the garb of modernization and development.  — Naeem Baig

Rs 7.65b so far fed to capital’s Metro Bus Project

MAY 16, 2014 BY AGENCIES

The federal government has so far released about Rs 7.65 billion for the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project likely to be completed in 10 months.

Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms spokesman Asif Sheikh said that these funds were released under the federal development budget. He said that the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already accorded approval to this project.

Sheikh further said more funds will be allocated for this project in the budget for the fiscal year 2014-15. The project is likely to be completed in January-February 2015 as it will be completed in 10 months, he added.

The project is feasible and a revolutionary step to benefit hundreds of thousands of labourers, students and low paid employees travelling between the twin cities.

A minimal fare of Rs 20 will be charged from the commuters and the bus will ferry them to their respective destinations in 20 to 25 minutes.

According to official sources, the project has permission and No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (PEPA).

The project has been awarded to the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) while Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been asked to extend all possible cooperation in this regard.

The experts and other stakeholders have highly appreciated the project and lauded the government’s commitment to complete more such projects during its five-year tenure.

The official said that it was the vision of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to give every facility to the needy and poor of the country. He agreed that some trees have to be cut during execution of the project but he mentioned that there was an alternate plan of planting more than those being cut. He said that affected shop owners have also been compensated.

Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus: Rasheed submits petition against project in Supreme Court

June 08, 2014

Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed submitted a petition against the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus project in the Supreme Court on Saturday. The petition to the court stated that the project was largely driven by corruption and asked that the Supreme Court to order an investigation into the matter. The Punjab government is named as a respondent in the application.

Further, the petition stated that Murree Road, which runs from Islamabad to Rawalpindi, was dug up, causing a lot of problems for traders who used that route to transport goods. The fundamental rights of people were being violated by the project, it stated further.

The request was filed under Article 184 (3) of the constitution which states: “Without prejudice to the provisions of Article 199, the Supreme Court shall, if it considers that a question of public importance with reference to the enforcement of any of the fundamental rights conferred by Chapter I of Part II is involved have the power to make an order of the nature mentioned in the said Article.”

Amid concerns from members of the opposition parties, the government on Wednesday assured the National Assembly that the concerned authorities would ensure protection to environment in the federal capital while carrying out project of Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmad clarified that the project has been launched after getting approval from the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) in writing.

MNAs of the Pakistan People’s Party, including Dr. Nafisa Shah, Syed Naveed Qamar, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho and Shazia Marri, raised a calling attention notice to voice their concerns regarding what they termed a grave threat to natural environment of Islamabad due to the ongoing Metro Bus Project without prior approval of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency.

It may be pointed out here that the Pak-EPA held a public hearing of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the project on May 3 and issued a conditional NoC to the project on Tuesday (May 13).

The minister told the National Assembly that the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service is a revolutionary and feasible project launched for poor commuters who cannot afford their own vehicle. He said the project will provide speedy and cheap travel facilities to the residents of the twin cities.

Terming the Lahore Metro Bus Service a success story, Shaikh Aftab Ahmad said that the project was completed in a record time of ten months and 0.7 million people were using the facility everyday.

Shaikh Aftab Ahmad said that the government would fulfil all promises in its five-year term.

Earlier, the leader of the opposition, Syed Khurshid Shah, said that the Punjab Government and the Federal Government have started the Metro Bus Project in Rawalpindi which he felt was discrimination with other provinces.

On these remarks, the minister of state for parliamentary affairs assured that such projects would also be undertaken in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.

Shazia Marri wanted to ask a question as to which private company was providing iron for the project. The opposition members shouted ‘Loha, Loha’ after receiving no reply from the government benches.

Syed Khurshid Shah questioned why the government was reluctant to name the company which was providing iron for the project. “It is iron made in Pakistan, whether taken from the Ittefaq Foundry or Pakistan Steel Mills,” he said.

In power, it’s performance that matters, not seniority

In power, it’s performance that matters, not seniority

Ashraf Mumtaz

When Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif went to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of Indian prime minister Nirendra Modi, his daughter Maryam Nawaz said her father was more experienced than the new Indian leader and was also senior in age. She was absolutely right. Mr Sharif has been holding the office of the head of government for a third time while for Modi it was the first chance.

But what the budding PML-N leader, who is the chairperson of the Rs 100 billion loan programme launched by her father for the youth, did not realise was the fact that in politics seniority was not as important as performance of any office-holder. He who outperforms others is a better leader compared to his rivals even if he has no past experience and is younger in age.

Just a brief mention of the decisions taken by Mr Modi after taking over would give the PML-N leader – and others – an idea of what the new Indian leader plans to do for his country.

According to the Indian media, in the first cabinet meeting after taking charge of office on Tuesday, Prime Minister Modi set up a special investigation team (SIT) to unearth the black money stashed abroad. Justice (retired) MB Shah will head the SIT team, while Justice (retired) Arijit Parsyat will be his deputy.

“SIT shall have jurisdiction in the cases where investigations have already commenced or are pending or awaiting to be initiated or have been completed. SIT will prepare a comprehensive action plan including creation of necessary institutional structure that could enable the country to fight the battle against unaccounted money”.

India’s Supreme Court had ordered the establishment of such a committee back in 2011, but the Manmohan Singh government had failed to comply with.
The team set up by Mr Modi comprises such former judges and relevant officials that it would not be possible for anyone to save his ill-gotten wealth abroad.

The new Indian prime minister is also said to have issued a directive to his ministers: not to give their relatives jobs in ministries, especially for their personal assistance.
A recommendation for the purpose had been made by the upper house in the past, but the Indian government remained unmoved.

It’s the Modi government which is determined to enforce the recommendation.

According to the Indian media, ministers have been directed not to award contracts of projects in their jurisdiction to their relatives.

Fairness demands that Modi’s decisions should be commended.

It is said that Indians have stashed trillions of dollars in foreign banks, and in case the new government succeeds in bringing them back, it will not have to impose taxes on people for several years.

There is no reason to say that Modi’s initiative will not yield results. A leader who himself doesn’t have ill-gotten wealth is not expected to let others involve themselves in corrupt practices. And he will go to any extent to claw back the ill-gotten money lying in foreign banks.

Now, let’s have a glance at the policies that the third-time Prime Minister Sharif has been pursuing.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, a close relative of the prime minister, said recently that Pakistanis had $200 billion of ill-gotten money in Swiss banks and the government would take steps to bring the same back. Talks with the Swiss authorities would be initiated in August and would take several years to complete and yield results.

Opposition leaders have been urging the prime minister and Mr Dar to bring their own money back to Pakistan first, but both the ‘saviours’ don’t say if they would ever do so.

PPP Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said recently that although Mr Sharif was urging British investors to invest in Pakistan he himself was the third biggest Asian investor in Britain.

Since the rulers are not willing to take the risk of bringing their money to Pakistan,

nobody else is expected to follow suit. And Mr Dar’s efforts to bring back the looted $200 billion would remain confined to files.

Superfluous to recall that the PML-N government had repeatedly assured the nation that it would bring back $60 million Mr Zardari allegedly has in Swiss banks. But so far, there is no progress on this front. Mr Zardari’s counsel said in a previous interview that the former president’s did not have a single dollar in any Swiss bank.

As for Modi’s directive that ministers should not employ their relatives in their ministries,

Maryam Nawaz should spare some time to compare the policy of the Hindu leader with the one of her father. The Indian prime minister wants his colleagues not to employ their relatives in ministries, while in Pakistan all important positions have been occupied by the same family. And the ministers have then crammed their relatives everywhere.
Modi’s directive that contracts should not be awarded to relatives is also not applicable in Pakistan.

The Indian media said that Prime Minister Modi had kept his relatives away from his swearing-in ceremony.

Here in Pakistan all family members, relatives, relatives of relatives, friends and friends of friends were present at the swearing-in of Prime Minister Sharif.  Still, it’s true that our prime minister is senior to the Indian leader.

NAWAZ SHARIF ORDERED PERVAIZ RASHEED TO DEFEND GEO & JANG AT ALL COSTS:BLASPHEMY IRRELEVANT & INDIA’S IMAGE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PAKISTAN ARMY’S REPUTATION

Pervaiz-Rasheed-hints-at-going-to-any-extend-to-save-Jang_Geo

MAY 19, 2014

By Raza Ruman

Islamabad, May 19 (Pak Destiny) Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed has hinted that he will go to any extent in supporting and saving the Jang/Geo group come what may.

Perviaz Rashid has warned the Cable Operators of blocking any TV channel (Geo) or disturbing its number.
He did not condemn the Karachi Press Club incident in which Geo group reporters stopped the Cable Operators from holding a press conference.
On the issue of ISI chief bashing, Pervaiz Rasheed has not yet given comments being a law minister too sought from the PEMRA.
Earlier,he had made it clear “we are with the people of dalil (Geo group) not with the people of galail (ISI, army)”.
Let’s see if Mr Rasheed manages to save Geo from shutting down after the latest blasphemy episode involving its host Shiasta Lodhi. But one thing is clear Pervaiz Rasheed is making all out efforts to save the media group whom Imran Khan has labelled “PML-N media cell”. – Pak Destiny

At 15, Shiny was the brightest student and scored straight A’s in her O-Level Examinations. Her parents were busy doctors minting a fortune and wanted her to score straight A’s in A-Levels to join a medical college in the UK. Pressures on her to perform were very high and parental care nonexistent. Browsing on the internet, she found names of anti-sleeping pills to stay awake. She used them, but fell into a depression. Within a year through friends on Facebook, she progressed to charas, heroin injections and amphetamines. Her parents, too busy with their routine, attributed dark circles around her eyes and loss of hair to over work, but never bothered to check her arms for punctures. She fell back in class and died of drug overdose before she was 17. Adnan’s mother is a widow with two sons and a daughter. She has worked hard to educate her two elder children who are now employed aboard with hefty salaries. Five years ago, they moved to Baharia Town. With no supervision, Adnan got hooked to sheesha, hash and ecstasy. He started becoming violent and would often injure himself or cut his wrists. He was expelled from the college. He reacted by bringing gangsters outside the schools and colleges where his friends studied and involved in fights with firearms. He has abandoned education and operates a gang of drug addicts, who are involved in fights outside schools and colleges. The mother, who once defended him stoutly, is now helpless. For Adnan, it is a matter of time. Meena is a foreign educated business developer. Working in a BPO, she got hooked on to drugs through young executives working at night at call centres. Out of job due to drug abuse, she now heads a gang of young addicts and peddles for the elites of Islamabad and Bharia in heroin and crack. Two of her friends have died of overdose. These are alarming events and tip of the iceberg. It is a devil that haunts the urban elite education centres and call centres where youngsters are vulnerable and the nouveaux riches, who have no time for their children.

A decade back, hash and heroin was deemed to be a poor man’s refuge due to the prohibitive cost of imported liquor. However, the trends are now changing. Hash, heroin, amphetamines, hallucinogens, ecstasy and Ketamine compounds have proliferated into the urban elites of Pakistan. The route of entry is invariably private education institutions and BPOs operating night shift of youngsters, who attend school or college at day. Invariably, it always begins with efforts to keep awake and ends in tragedy. Outside the premises of these institutions, peddlers and criminals operate with impunity to befriend new customers. Rave parties, dancing events and attractive satanic captions splash pages on the social media. Sheesha centres in urban malls and posh localities located in farm houses are the high points of the nouveaux riches addicts where ecstasy, syringes and crack are a token of status. Once hooked there is no return. Pakistan’s drug statistics are shocking. According to one report, over eight million Pakistanis are using drugs. The numbers are likely to touch 15 million in the next few years. Over 57 percent amongst these use heroin. According to another report amongst the women, 47 percent are college or university educated professionals. Nearly half of all urban addicts are school/college going students studying in private institutions and live in posh upcoming housings. According to DG Narcotics, private educational institutions are more vulnerable than the government educational institutions to attract the students towards drug addiction, mainly because the elites can spend more. He also expressed the opinion that addiction rate was proportional to tuition rates, where both parents were working and where parents don’t have enough time for their children. The drug of choice for the rich urban elites is not heroin but crack, a derivative of cocaine traded in dollars and euros. Private education institutions from schools to universities have failed to check this rising menace within and outside their bounds. Most hostels of boys and girls also have dens from where this trade is run. In hostels, students experiment with chemicals to manufacture stimulants and hallucinogens in which Ephedrine and Ketamine are the basic drugs of choice. Recently, a hostel in Islamabad was found to be both a drug and prostitution den. In street corners, Garda, a lethal mix of tobacco, charas and stimulants in readymade cigarette rolls is available to anyone across the counters; usually the high school students. In Pakistan’s urban centres, no one seems willing to take on the challenge. The district and municipal administrations despite tremendous civic powers at their disposal prefer looking the other way. Action by police is usually to extort more money from the peddlers and addicts. Private educational institutions in their desire to earn money prefer to keep their eyes closed, even to galas and dinners held in their own premises. Academicians lack the administrative fist and the leader’s prowess to deter, cajole or convince students. Nobody cares to inspect the hostel premises or why students have dropped semesters. Tutorial and social care groups are nonexistent. Visiting faculties consider having their hands washed of all responsibility and accountability. Cases instead of being reported to police and ANF are hushed up by disciplinary committees. There is a total absence of any dissuasive or punitive policy. The time for holding ceremonial seminars on drug abuse as a compulsive expenditure should now be over. It is time to act. Detecting and preventing drug abuse is a social, civic and collective responsibility and not confined to police and ANF. Urban administrators, cantonment boards, institutional administrations and civil society groups need to wake up to this challenge and evolve aggressive action plans to combat this menace before we lose more youngsters to this social evil.

Islamabad: The country’s capital Islamabad, has become a hub of drug addicts. Saach.TV, after receiving complaints from the people, visited several areas and found shocking incidents that involve also the premises of a fast-food chain. The areas also include parking lots. Youth of Islamabad often come around here to enjoy their evenings and conduct social gatherings. However, this recreation now involves drug use, besides sale and purchase. A visit by the scribe revealed the amount of drug consumption in the parking lot as well as the adjacent park near the restaurant. Unfortunately, there are no checks and balances, though there are check posts of police round these corners. There is no police present inside the premises as the restaurant has its own security outside to inspect the vehicles for any security-threatening object. Such activities are also taking part in different areas of Islamabad including prominent universities. A student of Quaid-e-Azam University disclosed to the scribe that weed is very much open in university premises and there is no check from the police. An ex-addict told the scribe that the weed is easily available in Islamabad. He said, “Mostly people take drugs to relax themselves. The culture has been imported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and most of the weed comes from that place.” Talking about the suppliers of weed, he said, “The suppliers of weed are easily available at different places and they work on a small scale. Main handlers of the suppliers operate from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” Giving his expert opinion on the matter, Dr. Wahab Yusufzai, a Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at Shifa College of Medicine told Saach.TV that it is very unfortunate that this epidemic has spread in our society. He praised the role of media in identifying the issue and urged the government to run an awareness campaign. He strictly criticized the increasing culture of Sheesha among the youth and termed it as a catalyst to take youth at the verge of drugs. Talking about the technicalities and solutions to eradicate this menace from the society, he emphasized, “Police has to take measure in controlling the supply and trafficking being done. Stopping the supply will surely decrease the addiction.” He also asked the parents and universities to play their part in monitoring the youth. He said, “There should be a strong liaison among the parents and teachers and they should keep a watchful eye over the children. Parents must scrutinize the behaviour of children and also put a full stop on the increasing habit of youth to stay awake at night and sleep all day.” Saach.TV tried to contact the Inspector General of Police, Islamabad but he was unavailable. His Public Relations Officer (PRO) said, “Islamabad Police has been cracking down on these elements daily and it is evident from their daily press releases.”

Who is this Pakistani Spy?

Posted on January 18, 2010 by alaiwah
About two years ago, a British military attaché in Islamabad was dismissed after he “lost the confidence of the British High Commission” following what London called his “inappropriate relationship” with a Pakistani female ‘spy’. Brigadier Andrew Durcan, 56, was recalled in January 2007. All hell broke loose after Aroosa Alam of an Islamabad daily, Pakistan Observer, ventured with what she claimed was an expose on how the drama involving the British military attachÈ and the female spy played out. Alam pointed to a certain research fellow, who happens to work for the ISS as the spy in question. This infuriated Dr Shireen Mazari, the ISS boss, who then went to town with a rejoinder that attempted to cut Alam down to size, but which in turn, drew the fury of the offended daily. Credibility was at stake, after all. It is no secret that in diplomatic missions, some officials serve time for work other than their stated job-description. It is quite probable that Brigadier Durcan had a few skeletons in his cupboard, which is, in part explained by his rather secretive dismissal following a “loss of confidence” at the High Commission. Islamabad’s statement that it was never informed of the decision is, again, a pointer. British Ministry of Defence, which seconds senior officers to the Foreign Office as military attaches in embassies around the world, confirmed the dismissal but declined to discuss the disgraced official’s future postings or whereabouts. “The High Commissioner in Islamabad considered his platonic friendship with a Pakistani national inappropriate and, as a result, lost confidence in him. He has been investigated and cleared over potential breaches of security,” is what a statement from the ministry said following the revelation. The married Durcan is a former commander of the Gordon Highlanders, 52nd Lowland Brigade and deputy inspector-general of the Territorial Army. He was nicknamed “the tartan barrel” by officers under his command in Scotland because of his girth. But to most Pakistanis, it is the alleged involvement of their compatriot, a female at that, which is the most intriguing element of the soap opera. Aroosa Alam, the daredevil reporter, decided to put them out of their misery with this expose:

“Careful and thorough investigation and a number of background interviews with military diplomats close to Brigadier Durcan revealed that a research fellow from Institute of Strategic Studies is the lady behind the whole affair. “Holding dual nationality, one Pakistani and other British, Ms M K, has been associated with the Institute for many years. She deals with a number of defence-related issues and has written many research papers particularly on conflict resolution, non-proliferation, and EU. “She frequently travelled between England and Pakistan. In Pakistan, she sought many interviews with various high-level defence officials even in Pakistani military hierarchy. She came under suspicion by M16 undercovers in Islamabad mission when she sought interviews with defence officials of the High Commission to be used in her research papers. “According to sources, she would ask some very pointed and pertinent questions. But when she went back she never used these interviews and wrote nothing on these issues. Intelligence authorities in the High Commission were then alarmed and started suspecting that these questions were asked by her for not her own research papers but for the consumption of some one else. This was some time last fall. The girl and the Brigadier were monitored. Phones were bugged. Even the room and the house of the British Military Attache were bugged. “Some sources claimed that some filming was also done to prepare incriminating evidence. Both were also spotted intimately together at some social functions. Sources claimed that the Brigadier also travelled to England many times to spend time with her and his engagements in England were also watched and closely monitored. “A team arrived from London in early January this year after Christmas holidays and the Brigadier was confronted for the first time about the status of his relations with the young lady. He was asked to report back to London where, according to sources, he appeared before a three-member military tribunal along with the internal inquiry report, and evidence based on phonic conversations and perhaps with some pictures”.

Aroosa Alam drew a swift riposte from Mazari, who called a press conference the very next day, refuting the allegations point-by-point. She said although the research fellow mentioned in Alam’s report did work for ISS, all references to her subordinate’s name – right from the work specifics to foreign travel and dangerous liaisons with the disgraced British official – were factually wrong. Mazari was clinical in her assertion and rounded off the rearguard by demanding an apology from both the reporter and her paper, failing which she threatened to seek legal redress. However, her charge that the paper was undermining national interests and becoming a tool for vested interests, drew a scathing rejoinder from the paper, which made no secret of its displeasure by stating that it did not need a sermon from someone under the microscope. In fact, it went on to suggest that it had done a favour to Mazari by publishing what it did since that “put an end to wild guesses being made in the city about some of the known media-related female academics, including Dr Mazari herself, for being the lady in question”. The prime time battle was apparently, won by Mazari, when the paper finally, issued a front-paged “clarification” by its editor, regretting the “inadvertent” nomination of the ‘spy’ (MK) in the story, which it denied was true. It has now emerged that the alleged ‘spy’ is, indeed, not the one named in Alam’s controversial story but someone else. However, some contents of her story, apparently, do hold ground. For instance, the incriminating evidence one got to see clearly belies London’s claim that its official did not have the kind of relations with the ‘spy’ that a certain Bill Clinton allegedly had with the most known intern in history.
