Idolise Imran Khan or pillory him, the fact remains that against the odds, out of the seemingly impossible, through sheer force of personality he has shaped an agitation…which if led by the half-hearted, or the weak of will, would have died a natural death long ago.

“Go Nawaz go” did not seem much of a slogan to begin with but it is now catching on. The PML-N stalwart Pir Sabir Shah may now say that his tongue  faltered when instead of saying “Go Imran go” at a party rally in Peshawar he found himself saying “Go Nawaz go”. Even if we are to take him at his word, and give him the benefit of the doubt, isn’t this a Freudian slip revealing the subconscious mind? Two weeks ago in ‘Bozos who make morons look good’ I argued that the time may have come for Imran and the Reverend to re-examine their tactics and call off their sit-ins. I thought their sit-ins were losing steam and the two leaders had nothing much left to say. And I took a dig at Imran’s powers of oratory. But as I have talked to people over the past few days I am coming to the reluctant conclusion that I couldn’t have been more off the mark. As our two leaders rail and thunder against the ‘system’ or the existing order of things, they are touching some chord somewhere because people are liking what they are saying. And the fiercer the attacks the sicker and more out of touch with popular feeling the Sharif dispensation looks. Whether because of inflated and cooked up electricity bills – probably the first time we are witnessing something as brazen and crooked as cooked up bills – or joblessness or inflation, it’s hard not to see that amongst whole sections of the population, the poor and the not-so-privileged, there is a great discontent against Sharif-style Thatcherism…the Thatcherite approach being to favour the rich and screw the poor. Like them or hate them, admire them or make fun of them, the only two persons in Pakistan today giving voice to this discontent are Imran Khan and the Reverend Qadri. When they speak their audience is not just the few thousands in the sit-ins but the millions watching the spectacle on television. If this is an ISI plot shouldn’t we be grateful that for once the ISI is on the side of the people? This is a strange democracy sections of the commentariat are glorifying, which seems so removed from the ebb and flow of public opinion.  In times past Pakistani democracy’s biggest fear used to be from the bayonets of the 111 Brigade. In the Nawaz brand of democracy the fear of the bayonet has been replaced by a fear of a vote recount. It seems more afraid of the workings of the judicial process. So in face of widespread evidence that in entire Lahore constituencies there was systematic rigging, Sharifian democracy is adamant that there should be no vote rechecking. Faced with the Model Town shooting this democracy is adamant that the ends of justice should not be met. The Punjab government itself appoints a one-man tribunal to look into the Model Town incident. And when Justice Ali Baqar Najafi of the Lahore High Court is so heedless of consequences as to write the truth – the truth as flowing from the evidence coming before him – the Punjab government is aghast and every effort is made to suppress the report. This is our version of democracy. But something will have to give. Imran and Qadri are not going away. They are staying put in D Chowk and there’s nothing a beleaguered, fever-stricken government can do about it. It may badly want to use force to clear the dharnas but it dare not because it knows that because of the resistance put up by the protesters the time is past for the police forces stationed in Islamabad to act above and beyond the call of duty. If nothing else, the dharnas and the speeches have given the police the first stirrings of conscience…strange as this may sound. The protesters meanwhile, having gone through their paces, are now battle-hardened. The use of force therefore remains not much of an option. The onus is thus on the Sharif government to explore ways to resolve this crisis. By now the protesters should have looked exhausted. But it is the other way round, the government feeling the heat. And Imran, changing line and length, has just had a very successful jalsa in Karachi. Already the economy is suffering, the State Bank’s latest verdict on the state of the economy making this amply clear. Suppose the agitation goes on for another month. How will everything look then? All this has happened because Imran and the Reverend, braving the odds, have stuck it out. When Imran said he would stay atop his container come what may, even if he was left alone, it sounded, to the sceptic at least in me, a bit like Don Quixote. Not anymore. Much of the punditocracy has got this agitation completely wrong, not that any certified pundit would readily admit to this….modesty not an outstanding characteristic of this class. For a long time they kept declaring that Imran had boxed himself into a corner and that he needed some kind of a face-saving exit strategy. For a long time the standard response to Qadri was to make fun of him. Now the jokes have dried up and there is less talk of exit strategies.  Those who really think they carry a democracy medal on their chests should pay tribute to the bravery of the additional sessions’ judge who ordered the registration of a case in the Model Town shootings. He’s proved himself a better democrat than many of the armchair samurai crying themselves hoarse in print and on TV about the grave conspiracies afoot against democracy. What else are Imran and Qadri saying? Only this that far from being a democracy this is a mockery of democracy and that true democracy can only come when elections are not stolen and there is some notion of justice in the land. When the law itself becomes a tool for evading the law, is there not point to Imran’s demand that vote rigging allegations can never be properly investigated as long as Nawaz Sharif holds the keys to power? Those mortally afraid of a Model Town case, are they likely to facilitate a proper inquiry into allegations of election rigging? The Sharifs knew how to deal with the PPP. They knew how to deal with Benazir Bhutto. A long list of PML-N figures got funds from the ISI for the 1990 elections. Yusuf Raza Gilani was defrocked as prime minister on the basis of a legal quibble. But has any action been taken against the beneficiaries of the ISI’s largesse in 1990? The PPP was never in a position to take on the Sharifs in the matter of rigging. It is just Nawaz Sharif’s luck that he is dealing not with a down-and-out PPP but a ziddi and obstinate Imran Khan. As for the Reverend, “woh toh ghar ke bhedi hain, woh toh sab jaante hain”. And at his beck and call stands an army of dedicated followers, ready to face anything on their leader’s call. Those eating political halwa all their lives have never faced anything like this. Small wonder they look so disoriented.

Dharna Visit – A Lesson in Discipline & Organization under Two Great Leaders

 Islamabad  Dharna-  6 Sept 2014

My wife and I teach in Rainbow Foundation School. Fired by the appeal of Dr Qadri, we decided to do our bit. We talked to the students for donations – whatever they could for those men, women, children who are braving the weather and time for our future. The children responded far better than one expects from children. Next morning we had a pile of a variety of gifts – even personal toys, which was very touching indeed.

On Saturday, 06 September 2014, with our car loaded with the neat packages clearly marked with contents, reaching up to the roof of the back seat, we left our house in Chaklala – 1,Rawalpindi at about 0645 in the morning. Not knowing the route,( poor Pindiites!), we took a few wrong turnings, and ultimately reached right into the Dharna camp from the Margalla Road side at about 0800 hours. This ia what we saw.

All along the route, the police were very helpful. Seeing the load in our car, they would happily wave us on towards the correct direction without check or hinderance. The camp started from about three hundred metres from the Margalla road. There were numerous men about, with name tags indicating their party and assignment, wanting to enquire and direct. The camp showed activity, but surprisingly, no noise.  Considering that there were thousands and thousands of men, women and children about, this was the first pleasant surprise. We asked one of the persons where could we hand over the packages to some authorised to collect them. He walked in front of our car towards the nearest Control container.

Driving through the camp we noticed various sights and stages of activities of early morning routines.People were shaking out their mattresses, spreading clothes out in the sun, which had happily come out after three days of continuous rain . There was a clear water mountain stream flowing through the camp, where people were washing up. Beyond, we could see a long row of toilets in containers. Nearer, we found lines of almost military discipline leading to a langar. Every one had his or her utensil and were being served breakfast by the caterer quite efficiently. On my asking whose party line was this one, the guide told me proudly “Sir, for eating time we are all together”! And I could scarves of both PTI as well as PAT in the same line. Very gratifying.

The nearest command container we came to, was the one we keep seeing on TV with Dr Qadri’s arms spread out and upwards. On asking to see someone in charge, some one came up introduced himself as Mr Ayub or Yaqub, who later on I was informed was, I think, an advocate! I said these parcels are from Rainbow Foundation School children, an Amanat, and therefore I need some photos so that I can put them up on the notice board for them to see. Within minutes he had organised 4-5 men with name tags who unloaded all the packages, lined them up, took out the toys , displayed them on top of the cartons, gor a press photographer . My wife acting as the press photographer, kept taking photos with my cheap camera. Seeing the pile of goodies, some women and men came up asking for an umbrella or warm Chador, but the PAT man in charge said no one would get anything here. “we have no authority do give out any thing. Dr Sahib will come at one o clock and personally distribute them. He will announce on the speaker who these are from”. And he didn’t. After the photo session, he asked my name and address, and the cartons were lifted up onto the container and stacked according to category. Very organised, very efficient. Being ex Army, I noticed, and was very pleased.

Thereafter we went around and drove through. What we saw was a real eye opener, and, I would say, a confidence builder.

In spite of all those thousands and thousands of Pakistanis of all casts and creeds and languages, having been in those unsettling conditions for over three weeks of sun and rains, there was no sign of fatigue, frustration or anxiety. People were calm and peaceful.

Inspite of such close proximity for so long in trying circumstances ther was no sign of frayed nerves, of quarrels, disputes or even heated arguments. Every one had a peaceful and content expression. Pakistanis are great cribbers. There was no such sign anywhere. Which was great.

The crowds had a high percentage of well to do, educated people amongst men as well as women. One group of young women that went past us were definitely teachers. We were told that the books, copies and pencils etc we had brought would be used in the schools for small children! So they already have schools going!

There were tents, shaamianas, tables and chairs in small groups, some occupied some vacant. Men were seated on some quietly, discussing whatever. Women and children were moving freely. Their body language clearly depicted a sense of total security, which was pleasant as well as amazing, considering our normal culture elsewhere.

Some entrepreneurs ahd set up shops and ‘khokhas’ doing roaring business, serving all sorts of wares from eatables to utility items, specially umbrellas!

Considering the multicultural conglomeration of teeming mankind there, the calm and homogeneity was remarkeble, almost unbelievable. The whole area gave the impression of a hastily built mini city, well organised and self contained.

The general impression exuded was “we have come to stay”. More importantly, I was impressed by the discipline, organisation, the calm determination, the sense of ‘doing the right thing’and self control of all the Pakistanis gathered there in such a small confinement.

All because of just two good leaders who have given this cross section of so called unruly Pakistanis, a sense of direction and conviction and hope:  Hope of a new and better Pakistan.

We came back full of confidence in these two leaders and confidence in the Pakistani nation. They have raised our hopes of a better future and dared us to take charge of our own destiny.

We are both old people, well beyond seventy. We came back very happy. We hope to go again next weekend. Inshallah.

May Allah bless these two leaders of ours with success. Aameen.

If only the other so called ‘leaders’ could take lesson from them instead of piling ignorant ridicule on them

Abdul Quayyum Khan Kundi’s
Commentary
My response to the joint session of the parliament:
Parliament has all the right to talk about the agenda of the protestors sitting outside. But what about the aggravating situation of poverty and decline in other human development index. What is parliament doing about rights of non-Muslims that are violated every day; about rising inflation which has made life miserable for over 60% of the population; about emancipation of women; about wide difference in quality of life between provinces and urban/rural; and about parochial approach of police to deal with law and order. What agenda has been set by the parliament to make Pakistan a social welfare state that was the vision of Quaid and Allama?

They should not forget that parliament is not an assembly of the elite but of people’s representative. They can protect their rights but they must not forget that the masses are watching them closely about rights of the majority and will hold them accountable. If these elites sitting in the parliament did not serve the people then they will rise up against them to snatch it from them by force.
