The Myth of ‘Aman Ki Asha’ By Sajjad Shaukat

The Myth of ‘Aman Ki Asha’

By Sajjad Shaukat

When idea of initiating ‘Aman-Ki-Asha’ (Desire for peace) was presented, the exponents of this initiative argued that it will provide a platform to Pakistan to make peace and end hostilities with India. They explained that it will also facilitate resolution of core issues between India and Pakistan like Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, and Water through a dialogue process. But, Aman-Ki-Asha which was promoted by the Geo and Jang Media Group in lines of Indian shrewd diplomacy against Islamabad has proved to be the myth. It provided New Delhi with pretext not only to keep all the issues with Pakistan unsettled, but also to distort the image Pakistan’s image, its ideology, Two Nation Theory, its Army and Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI). In other words, it was collaboration between Geo Group and India against Pakistan’s national interests.

However, the powerful presentations made by Geo Group convinced the politico-military leadership that the initiative is no doubt a noble effort. Unfortunately, Aman-Ki-Asha followed Indian agenda and created doubts in the minds of general public in Pakistan about Two Nation Theory. In fact, Pakistani nation is so inspired by the truth of Two Nation Theory that all past propaganda failed to create negative impact in this regard. Basically, Indian Hindus’ majority is against the Two Nation Theory, as it led to the partition of Indian. Indian designs to weaken the ideological basis of Pakistan have been facilitated through Geo and the Times of India, using Aman-Ki-Asha as an instrument of influencing opinions and creating misperceptions. Aman-Ki-Asha failed to facilitate resolution of various issues between New Delhi and Pakistan like Siachen, Sir Creek and Water including major dispute of Kashmir besides focusing on exploitation of different vulnerabilities of Pakistan, during global war against terrorism, instigating separatists in Balochistan, crating lawlessness in Karachi, muddling in the affairs of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and tribal areas by supporting Taliban or terrorists by using Indian Consulates, established along Pak-Afghan border. Similarly sectarianism has been intensified in various cities of Pakistan, while the nation stands divided on social, economic and political issues.

1004808_522172791170870_676795423_nBut, the collaboration between Geo media network and India has been exposed, as leaders of various political and religious parties including all the segments of society have been condemning the Geo and Jang Group by showing solidarity with Pakistan’s armed forces and ISI), in the aftermath of Hamid Mir episode which was manipulated by this media group.

On the same day, when its anchor Hamid Mir was injured by unidentified gunmen in Karachi, without any evidence or inquiry, Geo TV channel deduced hastily outcome, and displayed a photo of the DG ISI Lt. Gen Zaheerul Islam, while its some media anchors accused ISI and its DG in this respect, while Pakistan Army was also targeted.

Every thing became crystal clear when foreign media, NGOs and human rights groups reactivated their campaign against Pakistan, its army and especially ISI by supporting the so-called propaganda of the Geo TV, while favouring the misconceptions of Hamid Mir. Particularly, India avail the opportunity, and under the pretext of false accusations, its renowned newspapers, especially The Times of India including TV channels and high officials maligned ISI. In this connection, Geo media network which enjoys support of external enemies, itself indicates the evidence that it follows India which wants to destabilize Pakistan. In this context, on April 28, this year, voicing his support for the Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, BJP leader Yashwant Sinha called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif through a letter to stop ISI from suspending Geo TV license. It has unveiled the intrigue between India and Geo network.

But countrywide protests and rallies in support of armed forces and Pakistan’s prime spy agency, ISI which started since the day, Geo TV channel defamed country’s security agencies, accelerated against the Geo Network after its channel showed blasphemous content on May 14, in its entertainment morning show “Utho Jago Pakistan” by playing a Qawwali (a genre of Sufi music) “Ali ke Saath hai Zahra ki Shaadi” in the background of actress Veena Malik and her husband Assad Bashir Khattak’s wedding reenactment. It is a famous Qawwali about the marriage of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) daughter Syeda Fatima Zehra (R.A) with his cousin Hazrat Ali (R.A). In fact, it was part Indian cultural penetration in Pakistan through Geo Media Group. Now, besides the political and religious leaders, the intellectuals and general masses of Pakistan are raising slogans that Geo and Jang Group has been fulfilling foreign agenda, especially that of India against the country, and “shut down the Geo.”

Particularly, Chairman, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan who has also defended the stance of Army and ISI, announced to boycott Geo and Jang Group. In a press conference on May 17, Imran Khan displayed documentary evidence, revealing that Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, owner of the Geo and Jang Group is working against the national interests of Pakistan and is being funded by foreign countries like UK and the US State Department for shaping the national narrative on foreign agendas, while there is no audit of the Geo network which blackmails those who raise question in this respect. Imran Khan who has been protesting against the rigging in the elections 2013, repeatedly stated that PML (N) and Geo are the one team having common interests—Najam Sethi, an employee for Geo TV was made PCB chairman as a gift of Geo’s services, and rigging in the polls, while the ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry also played his role in this regard. Imran Khan further added, “Media trial of ISI and its chief by Geo TV is extremely condemnable which was done as per agenda set by Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman.” He had also indicated that the “US and India will be gladly looking at the maligning of Pakistan’s armed forces by the country’s own TV channel.”

Earlier, Imran Khan also criticized the said TV channel’s Aman Ki Asha campaign in the eastern border and Jang Ki Asha (Desire for war) in the western border which shows its double standard, while rejecting foreign allegations that ISI or Army is supporting militancy in Afghanistan.

Nevertheless, due to Aman Ki Asha, Pakistan’s ideology and Two Nation Theory have been considerably damaged. Credit goes to the team of Geo and “Times of India.”

Every Pakistani knows that the separatists in Balochistan get all sorts of support from India in particular and America including some other powers in general, but Geo would not project Indian stance. Because, Pakistan Army and ISI are the main targets of Indian propagandists, as Indian media leaves no stone unturned to damage the prestige and tarnish the image of these national institutions, and Geo facilitates Indian agenda. For the purpose, terrorism in Pakistan has been promoted by glorifying the actions of terrorists and linking it with human rights and missing persons’ case. Nevertheless, since the Supreme Court of Pakistan has been dealing with case of missing persons, especially of Balochistan, while speaking in the tone of anti-Pakistan elements like India, Geo anchors has implicated Pak Army and ISI about the disappeared persons as well human rights violations. They ignored the reality that the missing persons have been killed in subversive acts, arranged by American CIA, Indian RAW and Israeli Mossad through their affiliated militants groups. In case of Balochistan, foreign-assisted Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and other separatist outfits which have been fighting for secession of the province kidnapped and killed many innocent people and the security personnel in the province, while claiming responsibility like the TTP militants. These insurgents groups are responsible for human rights violations in Balochistan and other places of Pakistan.

In the recent past, when Quaid’s residency in Ziarat was attacked by the Baloch separatists, Geo TV blamed ISI for the episode, but after a few days, BLA claimed responsibility, releasing a video in that regard.

When on November 26, 2008, terror attacks occurred in Mumbai, the culprit who was caught alive was Ajmal Kasab. Nobody knew who Ajmal Kasab was and where he came from, but Hamid Mir and Geo broke the headline that Ajmal Kasab is Pakistani and is resident of Faridkot village. Geo TV was repeatedly displaying it like an advertisement to distort the image of Pakistan and its security agencies, which clearly showed that it was the result of a deal between India and this media group. Although Indian RAW took a forced statement from him against ISI, yet on December 31, 2008, the FBI team which visited Faridkot said that  no evidence could be collected, which could confirm Ajmal Kasab’s claim of being Pakistani national. In 2013, ex-investigative officer of the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation, Satish Verma disclosed that India itself arranged terror attacks on Indian parliament in 2001 in New Delhi and in Mumbai in 2008 to strengthen anti-terrorism laws.

It is notable that Hindu fundamentalist parties like BJP, RSS, Shiv Sena,VHP and their cohorts, which are promoting Hindu extremism have been committing gross human rights violations in India such as suppression of Muslims and Christians, attacks on their places of worship and so on. Besides, Indian military and paramilitary troops are also responsible for human rights violations in the Indian occupied Kashmir, while separatist movements in India continue unabated. These brutal atrocities and crushing the freedom movements have never been projected by Geo, while Balochistan issue remains favorite topic of Geo and The Times of India.

We can conclude that Aman Ki Asha has proved to be the myth, as the idea has created a negative impact on Pakistani public vis-à-vis Pakistan’s ideology, the Two Nation Theory, the image of Pakistan Army, ISI, the war against terrorism, insurgencies in Balochistan, FATA, cause of Kashmir, upsurge in sectarianism, civil military relations etc., while the disputes between India and Pakistan have further been sidelined as per Indian schemes. Hence, one can witness that Geo Media Group promoted Indian designs at the cost of Pakistan.

Reinvigorating the Core National Institutions

                                                           By Sajjad Shaukat

Every thing became crystal clear when foreign media, NGOs and human rights groups reactivated their campaign against Pakistan, its army and especially Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) by projecting the so-called propaganda of the Geo TV by favouring the misconceptions of its anchor and journalist Hamid Mir who was severely injured on April 19, this year when unidentified gunmen opened fire at his car in Karachi.

It is a good sign that the Government of Pakistan, political and religious parties, lawyers, intellectuals, media and civil society supported the core national institutions like ISI. They strongly condemned the Geo TV channel which deduced hastily outcome of the assault on Hamid Mir.

It is mentionable that Hamid Mir who was threatened by the Taliban, scheduled to go to Balochistan on April 19, but as to why, he managed to go to Karachi without appropriate security. And as to how target-killers came to know his arrival in Karachi. Besides there are a number of contradictions in the developments related to Hamid Mir incident. His driver and security guard remained safe, and they were neither detained by police for their initial statement nor appeared on the Geo TV in this connection. When other media analysts indicated that as to why no FIR was lodged, the same was lodged against unknown persons, without mention of ISI. But on April 24, first formal statement of Hamid Mir was conveyed to the media by his brother Amir Mir, holding ISI responsible for orchestrating the attack. Showing ambivalent approach, he also disclosed that according to Hamid Mir, he had also been facing threats from both state and non-state actors who could try to kill him.

ISI is alone coping with several secret agencies, working inside Pakistan. As regards external agents, a US national arrested at Karachi airport on May 5 for carrying ammunition in his bag is a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent, according to the report, published in Washington Post which quoted American officials.

Unfortunately, ISI has been in the eye of the wicked storm ever since extra-regional imperialists started expanding their influence in South Asia and Afghanistan. India has been in the forefront to malign ISI and Pak Army. Unfortunately, India succeeded in promoting its narrative through selected Pakistani media houses. In this respect, while hinting towards the Geo media group, senior journalist Majid Nizami commented, “Certain TV channel of Pakistan appears to be Indian.” This is due to its tendency to follow Indian narrative, during its electronic coverage. Since long Indian propagandists labeled ISI “a state within state”, while insinuating that ISI was harboring terrorists. Domestic media like the Geo and Jung group, instead of countering Indian allegations against ISI followed Indian themes and launched a media tirade against ISI.

However, Hamid Mir episode and subsequent media campaign launched by Geo TV to malign ISI and its DG created conditions for Indian and western media to propagate against ISI and its top leadership. Regrettably, some Pakistani politicians have also drawn sadistic pleasure by criticizing ISI without realizing that such castigation will damage the prestige of the outfit.

Nevertheless, India availed the opportunity, and under the pretext of false accusations, its renowned newspapers, TV channels and high officials implicated ISI. In this regard, on April 28, voicing his support for the Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, former external affairs minister and BJP leader Yashwant Sinha called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif through a letter to stop ISI from suspending Geo TV license.

In fact, anti-Pakistan forces are trying to weaken Pakistan’s core institutions to make them irrelevant or to destroy them, as this will lead to devastation of state itself.

Taking note of the foreign conspiracy against the integrity of Pakistan, Government of Pakistan, and our internal entities, especially other TV channels like ARY, Samaa, Express, Dunya Din etc. also rejected false accusations of the Geo TV—and outrightly rejected all plots designed to tarnish the image of ISI. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, while appreciating the services of ISI stated, “Government acknowledges the security institutions, particularly role of ISI for ensuring defence, security and peace in the country.” This is a positive step to eulogize the superior secret agency in wake of Geo campaign against it.

Patriotic Pakistani public feels that still much remains to be done in reinvigorating ISI, as lethal propaganda against our primary spy agency is causing irreparable damage to Pakistan.

Those entities like the Geo media anchors which always target ISI by manipulating various developments and issues in order to implicate this agency, under one pretext or the other, need to learn from Turkey and USA where spy agencies have been given additional powers to protect their national interests. In this context, Turkish President Abdullah Gul approved a law duly legislated by Turkish Parliament—expanding the powers of MIT (Turkish spy agency) to tap private phone conversations and collect intelligence related to terrorism and international crime. The law also offered the spy agency greater immunity from prosecution and provides for prison terms of up to 10 years for journalists and others who publish leaked information. This step was taken after media leaks which embarrassed Turkish Government on infamous Syrian predicament.

Similarly, at the request of US Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, US Senate removed a section from a crucial intelligence bill that would have required the White House to disclose information on those killed by the US drone strikes overseas. This has been done to provide protection to CIA for using drones to kill combatants and non-combatants. The sole superpower America could not afford to uncover the vulnerabilities of CIA, and therefore, the legislation was lobbied to pass laws to safeguard their spy agency.

It is also relevant to ask the anti-ISI human rights campaigners as to why they were silent on Turkish legislation and Bill, passed by the US senators to protect their spy agencies? The answer is simple, as these powers give top priority to their national interests, whereas the media stalwarts like Ansar Abbassi and Najam Sethi including other analysts openly question as to what is national interest in Pakistan. They simply do not accept that Pakistan’s national interests are vital and above every other interest.

Nonetheless, the main aim of Hamid Mir episode was to defame the ISI. Thanks God, statements of various political and religious parties in wake of continued public processions and rallies in support of the armed forces and ISI, and against the Geo media group have thwarted the foreign conspiracy against the national interests of Pakistan. In this context, our internal entities like media and civil society understand that firmness of the state is directly related to the effectiveness of country’s primary spy agency, assigned the task of protecting national interests.

Consequently, for the purpose, the Government of Pakistan, political parties, lawyers, intellectuals, media and civil society must continue their support by ensuring actions to reinvigorate the core institutions like ISI, and by giving a matching response to all negative propaganda against it.

Propaganda against the Army and ISI was part of the US agenda

Gen Beg warns of Egypt-like change in Pakistan

Propaganda against the Army and ISI was part of the US agenda

Proposes three-point formula to normalise situation

April 22, 2014    ASHRAF MUMTAZ

LAHORE  – Former Army chief Gen Mirza Aslam Beg on Monday proposed a three-point formula to normalise the tense civil-military relations, warning the government of an Egypt-like change in case urgent steps were not taken in accordance with his suggestions.

He proposed a three-point formula to normalise the situation

1. high treason case against Gen Pervez Musharraf should be dropped and he should be allowed to go abroad;

2.Pemra should ensure that no TV channel telecasts programmes that undermine the prestige of the army; and

 3. ministers or other leaders should be barred from speaking against the people who defend the country even at the cost of their lives.

Talking to The Nation, he said the civil setup would face no threat and the situation would normalise within no time if the government acted in the light of his suggestions. Otherwise, he said, a military general would take over, just like Gen El-Sisi did in Egypt, and the United States would support the change for its own interests.

Gen Beg was of the firm view that the Constitution would not be able to block a military intervention if the rulers did not give the army its due respect. “ZulifikarAli Bhutto had said the 1973 Constitution would bury martial laws, but it was the martial law that buried Bhutto”.

Critical of the flawed decision-making process of the present government, Gen Beg said the rulers did not properly calculate the likely negative fallout of their policies. According to him, the government takes decisions first and thinks later. As a result, its damage control measures don’t yield results.

Gen Beg said the army was like a family and Gen Musharraf was its former head. The way he was insulted created unrest in the rank and file which forced Gen Raheel Sharif to issue a statement that army will defend its honour and dignity. Compared to the anger of the soldiers, Gen Raheel’s statement was ‘very soft’ however, he claimed.

He said it was after Gen Raheel’s statement all government functionaries had gone on defensive and they were offering explanations that they did not want to insult the army. Such people should have been careful before issuing derogatory statements, said Gen Beg.

The army, he said, would not tolerate the way Gen Musharraf was being singled out for trial. Similarly, he said, the former president-COAS could not be held responsible for ‘high treason’ as what he was accused of having done did not fall in this category. A treason charge on a former army chief was just not tolerable.

Making a strong plea for permission to Gen Musharraf to go out of Pakistan, Gen Beg said if a man like Hussain Haqqani could be allowed to leave the country despite a very serious charge against him, why the former president-COAS couldn’t be given a similar treatment.

Explaining his argument that the US would support a general in power in Pakistan at a time when it was leaving Afghanistan after 13 years’ stay in Afghanistan, Gen Beg said the US always felt more comfortable in dealing with one man rather than an elected parliament.

He said when the US interest called for a change in Pakistan because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, it got Zulfikar Ali Bhutto eliminated and brought Gen Zia to the fore. Likewise, the US supported Gen Musharraf when its interests in Afghanistan so demanded.

According to Gen Beg, had a political government been in power in Pakistan in 2001, the US would not have got the kind of ‘facilities’ in Pakistan that Gen Musharraf had allowed them. Replying to a question, the former COAS said the US had deep penetration in all departments of Pakistan and it could bring about a political change at any time of its choice.

“I don’t say that Gen Raheel Sharif is going to become Gen El-Sisi (by overthrowing the political government), but a lot can happen”.

He alleged that the propaganda against the army and ISI was part of the US agenda as it was the most effective way of creating tensions between the civil and military leadership. “The higher the tension, the easier the change”, Gen Beg said.

Col. (Retd) Riaz Jafri : Hamid Mir Shooting

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

 Hamid Mir Shooting

There are no two opinions about the attempt on the life of  Hamid Mir under the fly over bridge near Karachi airport on Saturday 19th April being one of the most heinous crimes and must be condemned by all to the utmost.  However, it is surprising to note the haste with which the ISI and its Chief have been blamed by the family and the media.

If it was done by them then I demand that the supposedly most prestigious intelligence agency of the country ISI be disbanded immediately and its Chief given the marching orders for planning and executing the ‘mission’ so unprofessionally and amateurishly.

Why did they have to wait for him to go to Karachi and try to kill him there while he was in his car and the killers had only a limited time to take on a moving target?  Why couldn’t they do it in Islamabad at leisure with all the facilities and time at their

disposal to pick up the place and timings of their own choosing and most suitable to guarantee accomplishment of the mission?  Just stupid of the ISI to do such an important task in such an amateurish way !!

By the way, is the ISI, the agencies – as they call it, and the armed forces the only establishments antagonized by the gentleman with his utterings and writings? How about the others – the Police, the administration, the political parties, some of the autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporate authorities, a few NGOs, banks and bankers, industrialists  and the business corporations – to name a few who have not escaped the scathe of his pen and tongue . Could it not be planned by anyone of them and if not why not?

Lastly, what is that game called black mailing, at which some of our journalists are so deft?  Isn’t there a one in a million chance for such a possibility?!
