LAHORE: Malik Ishaq enjoyed Punjab government’s financial assistance ever since the Sharif’s came to power in 2008, officials on condition of anonymity told The Express Tribune. The accused terror kingpin belonging to banned Sunni outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), nominated in 44 cases in which 70 people were killed, allegedly received a monthly stipend, during imprisonment, from the Punjab government. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah confirmed the disbursement but clarified that it was given to Ishaq’s family, not him, as per orders of the court. However, upon further investigation, it was revealed that nor was there any such disbursements during former president Musharraf’s tenure, nor was there any court order pertaining to the matter. Furthemore, Ghalvi has also relocated from his native town out of fear for his own life. He had been currently residing in two different locations, moving back and forth for security purposes.
However, leaving Ghalvi out, two other key witnesses and one complainant have not been provided any security as of yet and fear for their lives. The men identified as Khadim, Sikandar and Abdul Ghafour (complainant) are the only people to have survived the court cases which have taken 20 lives, including eight people who were murdered purely for being associated with the case.
“I can be attacked at any time and I do not know if I will be alive tomorrow or not, as you know almost everyone who was a witness or a relative has been slain,’ said Sikandar, who now operating a cloth store in Dokota on Multan Road.
“When Ishaq was in jail eight people were killed mercilessly by the same group,” said Khadim Hussain, who is now a farmer in Dokota.
The complainant (Abdul Ghafour) of the first case against Ishaq in which 12 people were massacred during a majlis, said he has been awaiting justice for 14 years but has completely lost hope since the release of Ishaq.

At least I am fed up of listening to the incessant rhetoric and harangues from the highest to the lowest leaders of the PPP eulogizing ZAB and/or BB just for the sake of praising them on each and every occasion whether in context or out of context! Anything they do (though frankly not much) for the public good is always extolled to be in accordance with the vision and wishes of the late Shaheeds – one or the other or the both! Don’t they have anything of their own to offer to the people? Will they ever grow up to be able to conceive or visualize something good for the country all by themselves or will they always keep us and themselves reminding of the ZAB and the BB? It is comical to watch BB’s picture placed dutifully and cautiously on a table (at times not bigger the size of the picture itself) so that it remains prominently visible throughout the interview given by these leaders – whether the baby Bilawal or the stalwart Amin Faheem – what to talk of the hubby President perching it on the UN General Assembly podium! Has anyone in the history of the UN GA ever done so?
Whether they realize it or not, such cult worshiping goes against them. They are living under the shadows of the Shaheeds and martyrs – a shadow like that of the proverbial banyan tree that doesn’t let anything grow under it. No one takes such pigmies seriously, on the contrary consider them to be void of any vision, planning and leading the people. It is time they showed some mettle of their own and proved themselves to be capable of leading the nation from the front and not through the stilts of the shaheeds.

Lahore: A sprawling high-security private residence worth Rs 5 billion for Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, complete with bomb-proof structures and a landing strip for small jets and helicopters, is nearing completion in Lahore. The compound in Bahria Town, spread over some 200 kanals or 25 acres, is named Bilawal House after Zardari’s son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. According to a senior Pakistan Peoples Party official from Punjab, who did not want to be named, the residence has been gifted to Zardari by property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. 
The bomb-proof home is surrounded by lawns that can accommodate up to 10,000 people and has a runway for private jets and helicopters. The residence has bedrooms, conference rooms and offices. The compound is surrounded by 30-feet high walls fitted with security gadgets. Once completed, the residence will have a three-tier security system, sources said. Zardari, who is due to arrive in Lahore on Sunday, is expected to visit Bilawal House with his son, the sources said. Bilawal House is located about 1.5 km from former premier Nawaz Sharif’s palatial residence at Raiwind Road that is spread over 300 acres.

Zardari is preparing for all eventuality. He has constructed his residence like a fortress, so nobody can successfully attack. Still, if worse comes to worst, he has also provided an air-strip so that he can sneak away no sooner army may want to move against him ! Well Done, Zardari ‘Shahab’. Pakistan seems to have bright future -it can be nothing else when you are at the helm. India is blessed with Nehru Gandhi family to rule us for ever. We do not want Pakistan to be deprived -and it is now blessed with Zardari Bhutto dynasty ! Do propagate advantages of such dynastic rules, so that more and more countries can benefit through India/Pakistan’s joint dynasty-run regimes ! Hail Pakistan, Hail India

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia beheaded a Pakistani man in the eastern Khubar province on Wednesday after he was convicted of drug trafficking, the interior ministry announced.
Arshad Mohammed was arrested for smuggling heroin and hashish into the kingdom, the ministry was quoted as saying by the official SPA news agency.
His execution brings to four the number of people executed in Saudi Arabia so far this year.
Last year, the kingdom beheaded 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. The US-based Human Rights Watch put the number at 69.
Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s Shariah, or Islamic law.
The prince, who is not in line for the Saudi throne, was one of 10 people handed jail terms of four to 10 years in connection with an operation which landed two tonnes of cocaine at an airfield outside Paris in 1999.
Prince Nayef was convicted of illegally importing drugs, of complicity in the transport, detention and provision of drugs and of criminal conspiracy.
He was accused of providing a jet to transport the drugs from Colombia and using his diplomatic immunity as cover.
A grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch Abdulaziz, the prince has denied any involvement in the drug-trafficking ring.
His lawyers were not immediately available for comment after Thursday’s appeal court ruling.
The investigation leading to the prince’s conviction began in June 1999, when 800kg of cocaine with a street value of $30 million was seized by police in a raid near Paris.
He was indicted on the basis of testimony from three Colombian former drug barons – Oscar Eduardo Campuzano Zapata, Juan Gabriel Usuga Norena and Carlos Alfonso Ramon Zapata – as part of a plea-bargain in a separate drugs trial in the United States.
The Colombians, also convicted in absentia last year, were respectively handed four-, nine- and 10-year jail sentences.
But the appeals court increased those sentences so now all three face 10 years in jail.
The Colombians and Prince Nayef were ordered by the court last year to jointly pay a total fine of 80 million euros to the French customs service.
On Tuesday the court ordered the Colombians to pay a supplementary fine of two million euros each.
A Spanish art dealer and financier was handed a five-year sentence last year for taking part in a conspiracy with the aim of importing drugs.
Five other defendants were also given 10 years on the same charges as the prince in the 2007 hearing.

A French court sentenced a Saudi prince to 10 years in prison for abusing his role in a large-scale cocaine smuggling operation. But the prince isn’t likely to see the inside of a cell anytime soon. Saudi Prince Nayef bin Sultan bin Fawwaz al-Shaalan, believed to be living in Saudi Arabia, did not appear at today’s hearing, or the trial which preceded it, and was sentenced in absentia by the court. It also fined him $100 million for his role in the plot to smuggle two tons of cocaine from Colombia to an airport outside Paris in 1999. Nine other defendants were also convicted in absentia for their part in the operation. The prince, who is the grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch Abdulaziz and the son-in-law to the Saudi deputy defense minister, was found guilty of using his diplomatic status and a 727 jet belonging to the Saudi royal family to transport the cocaine. The United States has also indicted al-Shaalan with conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine but does not have a policy of trying cases in absentia. In 2005, a U.S. court found two other members of the operation guilty and sentenced them each to 24 years in prison and to pay $25,000 in fines. Former Drug Enforcement Administration official Tom Raffanello, who oversaw the U.S. investigation of Prince Nayef al-Shaalan, applauded the sentence of the French court. “I think it is a great thing. I wish more countries would try criminals in absentia, when it’s obvious they have avoided prosecution.” The prince is said to be living in Saudi Arabia, which does not have an extradition treaty with the United States. It also does not have one with France. “Because of that we have to catch a break in order to catch him,” said Raffanello. Prince Nayef al-Shaalan has denied the smuggling charges and claims he has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Saudi government.
