You Asked For It By Brig®Mehboob Qadir

Thanks to Brig. Qadir for another good article “You Asked for It” and his matured analysis of the situation. It’s no wonder if attack on Hamid Mir was a shooting drama orchestrated to malign ISI; time will prove by new role of Hamid Mir whether this apprehension was meaningful. They need to weaken the Army under inept but so called democratic leadership country has seen in past several years of civilian rule. Pakistan comes First – the civil society supports the Military.   —M. A. Chishty

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hamid Mir’s  apparently engineered  shooting seems aimed at more a sensational  propaganda tool than any real intent to murder ,  has kicked off a stinging media campaign by Geo-Jang -The News Group in the country against the Army and the ISI. Soon similarly inclined Indian and parts of international media picked up the strain and scandalized the matter further.Nawaz Govt and some of his ministers like famous Khawajas and  that other howler ; the Information Minister in cahoots with certain like minded TV anchors and newspaper columnists made sure that salt is fully and properly rubbed into Pakistan Army and ISI wounds.Troops and officers, both serving and retired were deeply hurt and are seething with resentment.Despite the provocation, Armed Forces’ response remained dignified and created a ground swell of public empathy, touched saner parts of media and finally certain political parties. But the nearly mindless twins refuse to see the writing on the wall.

The whole media circus stinks of ill -intent and intrigue.Role of political leadership has been seriously deficient and short of vision and grace in this entire sordid affair.Amazingly Geo -Jang group seems to wield an overpowering influence over our political leadership, judiciary, Police and fellow media houses like an Italian mafia.Repeated court orders to register cases against them have been disobeyed by the Police.Except a few rest of the print and electronic media outfits have been either told to remain silent, afraid or bought over.

For the first time one learnt that a newspaper as courageous as The Daily Times was finding it difficult to lift the attached article.

You Asked For It    By Brig®Mehboob Qadir ( Email:  clay.potter@hotmail.com)

Pakistan must be a unique country where her Defense Minister launches repeated malicious attacks on his own armed forces, keeps meaningfully quiet when they come under sizzling smear assault from a tainted part of media and acts deaf  on a written defamation complaint by the country’s premier intelligence agency, again, under his care. This is most likely a minister who cannot, perhaps, tell  Gyari from Trunk Bazar Sialkot. If you recollect Gyari is the site where 140 soldiers and officers were buried  alive to their eternal cold death under 70 feet of  snowy avalanche in Gilgit-Baltistan. What has the Defense Ministry  done for the families of Gyari soldiers, those 21 beheaded by TTP butchers in FATA  and thousands of other maimed and disabled soldiers  whose limbs were blown up by terrorist mines, shot through by TTP snipers  and bitten black by frost 40 degrees below freezing point at Siachen. All those precious lives and many more flowers of our youth uselessly lost to defend men like that and the rest of the scruffy clique. Ask them if there is a single such battle casualty from these fellows’ relatives, sons or daughters? Yet they had the temerity to label our superhuman sacrifices as paid for. I am sure not. It must be understood that guts and red blood  are needed to face the business end of the gun and fire a shot in anger. To do that one has to come from a line of  respected and valiant ancestors and not wool collecting petty merchants from the  foothill sheep markets.

What happened to the written representation, we would come to that a little later. Meanwhile his master and his pet poodles rushed post haste to show solidarity with those who are drilling big holes right into the roots of the state and jeopardizing the country’s survival, but comprehensively failed to visit a single soldier’s family killed fighting against terrorists or frozen to death defending Siachen. For these men, soldiers and officers are disposable but a dubious media anchor is indispensible for projection of the lightweights of the like. This coalition of the devious is not going to last long. They will expedite their own demise, count down seems to have begun.

Some of the more vociferous federal and provincial ministers are busy taking out their personal bile against the armed forces. One of them was Managing Director PTV when his ringmaster was unseated in 1999.This pathetic jelly bean was unfortunately given a specially rough treatment at that time, which he does not seem to have overcome yet. More importantly like his master he too refuses to learn a lesson from history. As a matter of fact, this time around we have a particularly nasty pack of men from the sooty smithies of Lahore and  leather tanneries of  Sialkot,  together driving the country towards disaster. These men appear Jurassic; long noses and no brains. Spiteful men with large egos can bring about quite a catastrophe.

We have peculiar national complexes which continue to afflict us, causing irrational, inexplicable and nearly mad reactions. To begin with we are homophobic. Not only that, our own shadow scares us; more and more as one climbs up the power staircase. The result is chronic insecurity, startled reactions and perpetual crisis of trust besides cold sweats. That is why at the highest level of state power in our country, the political ring looks more like a vipers’ pit rather than a reassuring company of men of substance. That is also the reason why we have some of the most erratic and delusionary men leading us to the precipice of guaranteed destruction.

We suffer from a strange predisposition for self derision and revulsion to respect. Indeed a sure sign of very low self esteem and mental deficiency. As a society we have lost the capacity to accept and gracefully absorb courtesy and respect extended to us. The reason is that these virtues of civilized people are considered as signs of weakness and vulnerability in our crass and brutalized society. Instinctively we try to detect trick and deceit if courtesy is shown towards us and are at a loss when we find none. Good nature and good manners are obsolete where as self respect is replaced by stark arrogance. Like the caged wolves we tend to pounce ferociously upon every hand extended and bite whatever moves. We have since long blurred distinction between fair possession and greed; privilege of power and corresponding obligation of duty. Finally, there is a devastating disconnect between acts of commission and onus of responsibility of the consequences. No one seems accountable for anything here. Malice, bile, urge to demolish the adversary brick and mortar and gross disregard to basic demands of law and decency have seeped deep into our psyche.

Thoroughly soaked in our steamy national traits and a few more of their own brands, we have a flight of scavengers at the state’s helm passing as our national executive. This time they also have a dirty-tricks media pack to help them outshout others. This pack is believed to be fed and funded from abroad and finds the leadership naive enough to swallow the bait. It is an alliance of the phony and an association of assured destruction. The way it launched media trial of the country’s premier intelligence agency on an engineered shooting of its pampered  anchor while the stunned government and shrunken PEMRA kept not only regrettably quiet but also ,perhaps, were  relishing the unseemly brawl, is despicable.

Pakistan Army and ISI‘s response was dignified just as these shriveled men stooped to record low in their depravity. The problem is that quiet dignity when pushed to the wall hits back with fearsome determination and a grave sense of purpose against the whole lot of perpetrators. To add insult to injury our comatose PEMRA in league with the coterie had not only sent a lukewarm notice to the pompous TV channel but never seriously considered the matter in their official meeting the next day. This collusion has not gone unnoticed. Play any tricks and fake any concern but the soldier is not going to be deceived this time. The attempt appears to test the patience of the Armed forces a degree more or may be to push them a little farther. A very dangerous game,if I may venture to advise.

Predicament with the present dispensation is manifold and tragically flawed. Mr Nawaz Sharif  and his inner circle have not been able to grow out of their persistent loathing of the very Army which was responsible, in the first place,to thrust them into politics. If left alone he could have made a famously successful iron baron .Somehow he immediately tends to go on to  confront competing state institutions and thus plays havoc with the country every time he comes into power. Please put your ear to the ground and listen to the deep rumblings forewarning of a coming earthquake. If not, then cup your palm to your ear and listen to the ominous hum in the ranks. It is one of the most dangerous sounds in the world, said Lord Halifax. There is an urgent need for sanity and careful reflection to avert a possible repeat debacle . However the real difficulty is with their defective software which has already ordered self destruct command. The romance is over.

AN ORDINARY PAKISTANI’S QUESTIONS: ATTACK ON HAMID MIR – — — USE YOUR INTELLIGENCE – ALMIGHTY CREATED YOU AS THE WISEST

LETTER TO EDITOR

ATTACK  ON HAMID MIR

if-you-cant-stand-behind-our-jawans

— — USE YOUR INTELLIGENCE – ALMIGHTY CREATED YOU AS THE WISEST

1 -: Why Hamid Mir nominated himself as ISI target?
2 -: Did he have any proof, if so . Why the evidence was not brought to court ?
3 -: By declaring ISI as likely killer ( being a renowned figure ) has Hamid Mir not invited enemy agencies like RAW / MOSSAD to carry out this easy task(targeting Hamid Mir)  and bring backlash against ISI ?
4 -: Why Hamid Mir, Najam Sethi, Ayesha Siddiqa & Deep Saeeda  have declared ISI as their likely killer but providing any proof to prove it in courts ?
5 -: Due to their which actions they feel themselves, why did they feel so threatened by their National Intelligence agency ?
6 -: Why Hamid Mir was targeted that day ? What important event happened that day in Pakistan ?
7 -: The most important event of the day for Pakistanis happened at Pakistan Military Academy. The whole nation admired our sons/daughters in the PMA passing out in grandeur. To was envious with this event? and who try to hated it ?
8 -: If ISI wanted to kill Hamid Mir, would  they use such amateurish tactic ?
9 -: World’s No-1 Intelligence agency,ISI will not do so poor planning. It was aware of his movements such as: Hamid Mir that after arriving Karachi  would pass through narrow streets but failed to target him? Was the assassin’s aim was so bad ? This whole episode is a Black Operation mounted by Mossad/RAW, but,  they used untrained amateurs, not to KILL Hamid Mir, but to injure him enough to achieve their airm of creating a ruckus  among Anti-Pakistan elements within Pakistan, like GEO, Ayesha Siddiqa and their ilk.

WE CONDEMN THE ATTACK BUT PLEASE — — USE YOUR OWN BRAIN TO ANSWER
THESE QUESTIONS AND DON’T BE BRAIN-WASHED BY DECEPTIVE MEDIA

Is Media Split or…? (Moeed Pirzada on Face Book)

In the pure interest of ‘common sense’ every man & woman with average IQ should be able to see through the façade of ‘Split Media’; let’s pull the mask off this funny allegation and see the man cleverly hiding behind the poster of ‘Azadi Sihafat’ and this phony debate of ‘Split Media’ and you will see media tycoon: Mir Shakeel ur Rehman, Owner of Jang/Geo. im

It is important to understand that the current battle in Pakistan is taking place not between the journalists but between Mir Shakeel ur Rehman and Pakistani Military. Both are sinners, both suffer from power grab impulses and have bones in the closets and it is military’s repeated interventions in politics that have lead to a situation where many intellectuals have understandably developed knee jerk phobias whenever a situation involves military. But despite this troubled history now compelled to choose between a self-serving businessman, “a Media Tycoon” and “a National Institution” that inspires countless millions, most journalists like most patriotic well meaning Pakistanis are choosing military over the antics of Mir Shakeel ur Rehman. [though generals are strongly advised not to over-read this support for this is purely nationalistic in nature]

Unfortunately journalists employed by Mir Shakeel ur Rehman are going everywhere in defense of their ‘Seth’ under the phony term of ‘Azadi Sihafat’ and creating bad blood with other media people by calling them ‘army stooges’. Even Editorials & columns are being written, thanks to unfettered Cross-Media ownerships & its Force Multiplier Effect. But we need to be kind to all of them; for poor souls, at this stage, have no real option but to defend the ‘Seth’ and they can’t say that we are defending actions of Mir Sahib so the only option they have is ‘Azadi Sihafat’ – but this ‘phony debate’ is not the real issue in a country with countless TV and radio channels, thousands of independent bloggers and millions and millions glued to internet and other social media platforms (almost 200k are following this one page alone) – And should we forget those 130 million carrying handheld devices? – Real issues are: Media Concentration; unfettered Cross-Media Ownership, lack of meaningful Editorial Boards inside the Media Organizations, absence of Ombudsmen and Compliance Officers inside the Media Organizations, absence of international standard HR-development policies and absence of meaningful editorial independence for journalists working inside various groups so that owners can’nt force them on streets to orchestrate political interests of their owner. The two issues (Absence of international standard Human Resource Development & Meaningful Editorial independence) are often not discussed but have huge significance. Since promotion and rise of journalists is not linked with performance indices but sycophancy and there is a huge power politics inside the industry built around this, so it is possible for owners of media groups to force journalists out on streets to defend political interests of their bosses. No one has used this more intelligently and skillfully than Mir Shakeel ur Rehman but problem is generalized. Cross-Media Ownership has become an international norm; it helps media groups to generate economies of scale and it would have been irrational for Pakistani govt’s to keep denying this. However like every other public debate in this unfortunate country, issues were not properly defined. While permitting Cross-Media Ownerships upper limits of size, total viewership’s & market share etc were not defined. Result has been a huge ‘media concentration & monopoly’ in the form of Jang, GEO & News ie the largest circulating Urdu paper, largest English paper and the most entrenched and most private channel all in the hands of one businessman: Mir Shakeel ur Rehman. This media monopoly is without exaggeration perhaps the biggest in the last one hundred years achieved by one single man in any single national market. Many will think of Rubert Mudoch and Berlusconi but their media empires were checked and monitored by powerful regulators and the presence of other media groups and also by the presence of highly educated and aware civil society groups that become watch dogs over media monopolies. Pakistani regulator PEMRA was a still born child; without an autonomous structure and without ownership of industry it has unfortunately become an “illegitimate orphan” This is a pure political challenge. Mir Shakeel ur Rehman has become so big that there is a clear cut “Fear” & “Need” Relationship with other media bosses, journalists, judges, politicians and political parties and governments who all are either afraid or in need of the support of Mir Shakeel ur Rehman and Mir Sahib consequently sees himself as a “King Maker” and is not afraid of directly launching attacks on state. Neither PM Nawaz Sharif who has decided to align himself with Mir Shakeel nor Pakistan Military that has decided to challenge Mir Shakeel fully understand the implications of the current crisis. And Imran Khan who was supposed to be the main opposition leader is missing from the political scene. Closing Geo is not the solution. A temporary snap closure would have created the moral effect, but the moment has perhaps passed. We have reached a situation in our Media history (Murdoch & Berlusconi moment) where issues of monopoly and personal power of media tycoons need to be comprehensively addressed by politicians and intellectuals and civil society otherwise Media Tycoons won’t let govts and state function or achieve its national and regional goals in the best interest of electorates. Media Tycoons have not been elected by the people but due to their “mind controlling powers” over large segments of media and public they can play havoc. Media Tycoons can align themselves with political parties, army, foreign powers, intelligence agencies as per the need of the moment; challenge for the state is to curtail monopolies – otherwise governance is not possible. PM Nawaz needs to understand the risks of his brinksmanship; his decision to align himself with a media tycoon, Mir Shakeel ur Rehman, against his own military, in this crisis has backfired and PM Nawaz quite unnecessarily ended up reducing his moral authority and broadened the political space available to the military. One unintended consequence of this crisis & govt’s blunder has been that all those in media, civil society, public and political opposition unhappy with govt policies or Mir Shakeel ur Rehman’s power have by default empathized with the military and the bizarre situation is that military by default has started to look like a “political opposition” – this situation in a democracy is unacceptable and both Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan need to carefully analyze and take leadership above the fray. PM Nawaz needs to understand that his every next move is opening up more fissures and soon he will land himself in a chaos difficult for him to manage; and he is fast reaching there. If this chaos continued, he at best, will end up having a dysfunctional government which will be a tragedy because elections 2013 had given him a huge opportunity to create a legacy.

PAKISTANIS REACTIONS TO FIFTH COLUMNIST GEO MANAGEMENT’S GHADAARI (TREACHERY) PART 3

The way Geo has reacted and made false accusations against ISI speaks their mind set

The way Hamid Mir’s brother blamed ISI and levelled baseless allegations must be condemned.

PM Nawaz Sharif  should have, at least, suspended their license and instituted cases against Geo anchors and all those maligning the name of ISI the funniest thing came from Ansar Abbasi who demanded resignation of Gen Zaheer

By the way who is he? Whom he represents? If this is freedom of press we don’t deserve it

What happened to Mir is bad and must be condemned and culprits taken to ask

We also pray for his early recovery but the reaction was equally bad

Hakim Saeed, Salahuddin great journalist were killed but they did not put blame on anybody.

Our so called anchors must exercise caution and show patience and wait for the investigation instead of accusing premier intelligence agency of the country

GEO NETWORK BLATANTLY VIOLATES PEMRA’S POLICIES YET PEMRA STAYS SILENT

SOS PAKISTANIS:GEO INDO-US TROJAN HORSE

 Unknown-6

Petition filed against GEO Network’s channel Geo Kahani for airing objectionable content and violating PEMRA’s policies.

* Geo Network violated the PEMRA policy for all its entertainment channels.
* GEO Kahani airing more than 40% – 70% foreign content against allowed limit of 6%.
* PEMRA’s failure to enforce its policy on Geo Network is discriminatory.
* Petition demands cancellation of GEO Kahani’s license.

Violating the PEMRA policies by airing more than 40% foreign content, Pakistan’s largest law firm has filed a petition on behalf of URDU1 against ‘GEO Kahani’ which comes under the banner of GEO/Jang Network.

GEO Network is on a foreign agenda; promoting foreign content consequently Pakistan being subjected to cultural invasion.

According to PEMRA’s policy, 10% of the entire broadcast content of any entertainment channel can be foreign. Out of this, 4% of foreign content should be English and the remaining 6% can be non-English i.e. dubbed in Urdu or India.
GEO Kahani, however is clearly violating PEMRA policy by broadcasting more than 40% – 70% of foreign content as of today, even after the petition.

Holding power in the industry doesn’t give anyone the right to break laws. PEMRA being the lawful authority is responsible for taking actions against all such illegitimate activities. While in GEO’s case, no such action has taken on this open violation.
It has always been the case that GEO Group influences power circles through its dominancy. Does this mean it also has an influence on PEMRA? Is PEMRA covering GEO or will they take the stand and cancel GEO Kahani’s license in the light of this evidence!

Here’s what the petition states:

– Geo Network violated the PEMRA policy for all entertainment channels that states that only 10% of the entire broadcasting content can be foreign out of which 4% should be English content while rest of the 6% can include Non-English (Indian or other) content.

– The Programming of Geo Kahani, a part of Geo Network consists of more than 40% of Foreign content which consist of Indian and other non-English foreign content dubbed in Urdu – which is in clear violation of PEMRA’s aforementioned policy.

– PEMRA has not taken any action against this blatant violation of its policies by GEO Network on account of latter’s vast influence and power.

– Geo Network is abusing its dominant position and political influence as Pakistan’s largest media group to oust competitors.

– PEMRA’s failure to enforce its policy on Geo Network is discriminatory, unreasonable and arbitrary – which is in clear renunciation of PEMRA Ordinance.

– It is statutory obligation of PEMRA to ensure licenses are treated equally and fairly and do not exceed their programming mix limits imposed in their licensing terms.

– Such absence of action will have an adverse effect on diversity of electronic media in Pakistan and choice available to viewers.
