CICF thanks government for renaming a road to Cecil Chaudhry Road

cecil roadLAHORE: The Cecil & Iris Chaudhry Foundation (CICF) applauds the initiative taken by the government of Pakistan to rename a portion of Lawrence Road Lahore to “Cecil Chaudhry Road”.

Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry (SJ, S Bt and President’s Award for Pride of Performance) was a national hero, a highly decorated war veteran, a legend of the Pakistan Air Force, an acclaimed human rights activist, and an inspiration for all Pakistanis. He was bestowed with numerous honours from gallantry awards to equally high peace time citations for his bravery and courage.

A grand and befitting ceremony was organized by the Pakistan Air Force in which Air Officer Commanding Central Air Command Air Vice Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan was the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest Air Vice Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan paid glowing tributes to all the aspects of Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry’s life by honouring him as an ace fighter pilot of the PAF, an accomplished educationist and an acclaimed human rights activist. He ended his tribute by stating “I leave you with one last thought; there is a Cecil Chaudhry in every Pakistani, so let us bring him out in our spirits, so that the nation may reap the harvest of his courage and goodness. ”

Michelle Chaudhry, President of The Cecil & Iris Chaudhry Foundation and eldest among Cecil Chaudhry’s four children said, “We appreciate this initiative taken by the Chief Minister Punjab for recognizing and honouring the services rendered by our father Group Captain Cecil Chaudhry. Lawrence Road holds great significance in the life of our father as this is the road where St Anthony’s High School is located and he not only received his schooling from this school but also served as Principal of this institute for fourteen years.”

A citation was read out recognizing the services of the Group Captain to the Air Force and the country at large besides the tribute documentary by Pakistan Air Force. A plaque was unveiled by the Chief Guest which was later fixed on to prominent portion of the road.  The CICF President also expressed her deep gratitude to the Pakistan Air Force for organizing the event.

Guantánamo prisoners released to Uruguay: ‘We are so happy to be here’

Guantánamo prisoners released to Uruguay: ‘We are so happy to be here’

Six former US detainees who were never charged with a crime, were flown to Uruguay on Sunday to begin new lives as refugees

Over the past 12 years, Ali al-Shaaban has experienced precious little human kindness. Detained in Pakistan as a suspected al-Qaida member in the months after the 9/11 terror attacks, he was transferred to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, where he was held for more than a decade.

This week, however, the 32-year old Syrian has been the subject of a wave of affection in a country half a world away from his homeland: government officials offer him warm embraces; total strangers wave to him and offer words of encouragement.

Shaaban is one of six Guantánamo prisoners who were flown to Uruguay on Sunday to begin new lives as refugees. The six – four Syrians, a Palestinian and a Tunisian – were never charged, and were cleared for release in 2009, but the US struggled to find countries willing to receive them until the Uruguayan president, José Mujica agreed to accept them.imgres“We are so happy to be here,” he told the Guardian in his first public comments since arriving in Montevideo. Shaaban spoke by phone from inside the city’s military hospital, where the six men are recovering under friendly but tight guard.

“They get hugs from Uruguayan officials, friendly waves and the thumbs up from the other patients at the hospital, the Uruguayan reception team even bought bathing suits for them,” said Michael Mone, the Boston trial lawyer who secured Shaaban’s release from the US government.

Mujica has described his decision to receive the men as a “humanitarian gesture”, but the popular president – who has achieved international stature for his frugal lifestyle and progressive policies – may well have harboured more personal motives.

In his youth, 79-year-old Mujica was a member of the Tupamaros guerrilla movement, and was incarcerated under harsh conditions for 13 years – two of them in solitary confinement – by Uruguay’s military dictatorship.
“It’s a very traumatic situation, I can’t transmit how they must feel, some of us have lived through similar things,” Mujica told local television.
Despite his experience at the hands of the military, Mujica has not sought punishment for his captors and Uruguayans have twice voted in open referendums against trials for dictatorship-era crimes.
“We are very grateful to President Mujica for everything he’s done,” says Shaaban, who is very aware of the parallels between their cases. “I don’t want to let Mujica down,” said Shaaban.

One of the released men remains under medical supervision: Abu Wa’el Dhiab arrived in Montevideo in extremely frail condition after an estimated seven years protesting his detention through hunger strike.

The 43-year old Syrian – who was seized by Pakistani police in 2002 – has never been charged with any crime, and brought the first courtroom challenge the Obama administration’s force-feeding of hunger-striking Guantánamo Bay detainees

Lawyers argued that force-feedings were a method of punishment, not the medically necessary procedure the government has long claimed. When guards deemed Dhiab uncooperative, they would don body armour, forcibly remove him from his cell and strap him by the extremities and head to a medical bed. Guantánamo nurses then inserted a 110cm length of tube through his nose and into his stomach. The tube was sometimes lubricated with olive oil.

According to his lawyer Cori Crider, Dhiab had difficulty believing he would ever be released until he boarded the plane out of the US military base.

“You inhale the air for the first time as a free man and only then it’s real,” said Crider. “It’s going to take some time for him to come down from his hunger strike, he’s six foot five and only weighs about 148 pounds, he’s extremely thin, in pain, emaciated and still confined to a wheelchair.”

Crider recently obtained a court order for the release of around 11 hours of video showing Dhiab being force-fed, only to have it blocked a few days before Dhiab’s release by a government appeal. The Guardian is a party to the case.

The harsh treatment lasted up to the moment the prisoners descended from the US military plane in Montevideo early on Sunday.
The men spent their entire nine-hour flight to freedom in handcuffs, shackles, blindfolds and “ear defenders”, their lawyers said.
“When they arrived, the Uruguayans refused to let them walk off the plane in shackles, they insisted that they be allowed to take their first step on Uruguayan soil as free men,” said Mone.

Earlier this week, one of the men, Abedlhadi Omar Faraj, issued a letter of thanks to the Uruguayan people.

“Were it not for Uruguay, I would still be in the black hole in Cuba today,” said the letter. “It is difficult for me to express how grateful I am for the immense trust that you, the Uruguayan people, placed in me and the other prisoners when you opened the doors of your country to us.”

All except Dhiab have now been released from medical care this morning to be housed at quarters provided by a local trade union, which says that they have already received several job offers for the men.
The good will is evident even on the streets of Montevideo where
Crider has been the object of spontaneous clapping and congratulations from passersby who recognise her from appearances on the local media.
“It’s amazing,” said Crider. “The good will from the government and even from people on the street is unlike anything I have encountered in my 10 years of doing this.”
For Shaaban, who had been in Guantánamo since the age of 20, release from hospital means he can finally take a promised walk with his lawyer along La Rambla, the wide coastal avenue where joggers go running each morning. “I am looking forward to living a normal life and hoping to go back to school in Uruguay,” he said.

Pakistan arrests suspected South Asian al Qaeda commander BY SYED RAZA HASSAN

Pakistan arrests suspected South Asian al Qaeda commander

(Reuters) – Pakistani authorities have arrested a man they describe as an important commander in al Qaeda’s newly created South Asian wing, police told Reuters on Friday.

Police arrested Shahid Usman, in his mid-thirties, and four others in the southern city of Karachi late on Thursday. They also seized weapons and 10 kg (22 lb) of explosives.

Al Qaeda’s new South Asia wing, al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, tried to hijack a Pakistani navy ship in September this year, a few days after the group had announced its formation.

805826-targetkillerarrested-1418388396-940-640x480Police say Usman is the head of the al Qaeda wing in Karachi, a steamy port city of 18 million people, and was planning more attacks there.

“He is the Karachi chief of al Qaeda’s newly formed wing working under the set up of Asim Umar, the South Asia chief of al Qaeda,” a senior official at the police counter-terrorism unit said.

The official said Usman lived in Defense, a wealthy neighborhood, and owned a car-parts dealership in one of the city’s most expensive commercial areas.

“Unlike the usual militant profile, Usman comes from an affluent background,” the police officer said.

Officials said Usman was previously associated with the outlawed Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami militant group, whose operational commander, Ilyas Kashmiri, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011 near the Afghan border. Usman had received training in Afghanistan, the police officer said.

Al Qaeda announced the formation of its South Asian wing on Sept. 4 with al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri promising to spread a holy war across South Asia, home to more than 400 million Muslims.

Analysts say the move is part of al Qaeda’s plan to take advantage of the planned withdrawal of U.S.-led forces from Afghanistan and boost its influence in the region.

The new al Qaeda wing may also be an attempt to grab back the initiative from the Islamic State militant group that was expelled from al Qaeda for its brutal tactics and which now holds parts of Iraq and Syria.

Pakistani militants say envoys from the Islamic State are trying to make contacts in the region.

Usman’s arrest followed the reported killing of two senior al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan this month.

Terrorism is Mother of Evils and Sufferings By Sajjad Shaukat

Terrorism is Mother of Evils and Sufferings

                                                           By Sajjad Shaukat

Terrorism is the mother of all evils and root cause of Muslims’ sufferings in general and Pakistan in Particular.

Terrorists have maligned the name of Islam to have acceptability to their inhuman actions with a view to generating semblance of legitimacy.

Suicide bombers are mostly juveniles, oblivious of the fact that suicide is ‘HARAM’ (Illegitimate) in Islam. Allah (God) says, kill not yourselves. Surely Allah is merciful…and cast not yourselves into ruin with your own hands. Suicide bombers are not only killing themselves, but are also killing innocent human beings.

covert-war-against-pakistanWhile taking note of terrorists’ suicide attacks in Middle East and Pakistan, Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti (Mufti-e-Azam),Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh issued a Fatwa (Religious verdict), asserting that suicide attacks are illegal and illegitimate (HARAM).” He explained, “Such acts fall under the category of crime and suicide bombers or terrorists represent an adversary of Islam and enemy of Muslims…they commit crimes against humanity, while misguiding other Muslims.” Denouncing terrorism as un-Islamic, he pointed out that terrorists’ activities are part of a conspiracy to defame Islam and destroy Muslims.

However, in the recent years, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliated banned outfits conducted many terror-activities in Pakistan like suicide attacks, ruthless beheadings of tribesmen, assaults on security personnel and prominent figures including Shias, Ahmadis, Sufis, Christians and Sikhs. Contrary to the teachings on the importance of gaining education and knowledge in Islam, these terrorists have destroyed and torched more than 1,000 schools and mosques in Pakistan. They also attacked the female teachers in order to deny education to girls. Besides, terror-attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, Balochistan and Karachi are part of the scheme to create chaotic situation in the country. Indian Consulates in Afghanistan are also playing a very negative role in supporting TTP and Baloch separatists.

Unknown-2In this respect, choosing Pakistani venue for targeting innocent public by a suicide attack at Wagha border in Lahore, on November 2, 2014, while flag ceremony was being conducted on both sides of the border is testament to TTP’s terrorists’ hidden agenda and allegiance to the enemies of Pakistan. Besides, India is also encouraging TTP factions showing allegiance for DAISH ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria), to get united.

images-59Terrorism has caused massive damage to the prosperity of Pakistan during last 14 years. In this context, the Parliamentary Secretary for Interior, Maryam Aurangzeb informed the National Assembly on December 19, 2014, “Extremist groups have been active throughout the country with their own ideology…Pakistan which has been major victim of terrorism has suffered a loss of almost 80 billion dollars including loss of 50,000 precious lives of civilians and security agencies…huge collateral damage during the decade long war against terrorism.”

Undoubtedly, in our country, the victims of terror attacks and suicide bombings have been innocent men, women and children. Regrettably, those militant entities like TTP, which try to justify terrorism and suicide bombings in the name of Islam, are misguiding the people, while these brutal acts are clearly against the teachings of Islam.

From time to time, while condemning the militants’ inhuman activities as undemocratic and un-Islamic practices, Pakistan’s various Ulema (Islamic scholars) have clarified in their joint fatwa, and separate statements that “killing of innocent people, target killings and suicide bombings including sectarianism are against the spirit of Islam…the terrorists’ self-adopted interpretation of Islam was nothing, but ignorance and digression from the actual teachings of the religion.” They explained, “Islam does not forbid women’s education.”

While, Islam is a Deen or Faith of universal application, as it emphasizes peace, democracy, moderation and human rights including tolerance of political groups, religious communities and sects which are in minority in a country. It also permits periodic reinterpretation of Islamic teachings which is called Ijtihad.

The Constitution of 1973 which was unanimously adopted, clearly states that Pakistan is basically a democracy guided by the Islamic principles and values—no law would be made contrary to Quran and Sunnah.

Notably, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his sermon at Hajjatul Wida issued directions for protection of life, property and dignity of the whole mankind. The sermon became a charter of democracy which was included in the constitutions of the western elected governments in one way or the other.

In fact, Islam and democracy have co-relationship with each other. Diversified people and Ulema participate in the system of representatives, which does not exclude or discriminate any one on basis of caste, creed and sect. It does not confine religion to mosque.

Islam considers killing one innocent person equal to murdering the entire humanity, while Jihad is a sacred obligation, but its real spirit needs to be understood clearly, as killing innocent women and children is not Jihad. By playing in the hands of anti-Pakistan foreign countries, especially Indian secret agency RAW, the TTP and its banned affiliated groups are defaming Islam.

Every one knows that terrorism caused political instability, economic crisis, social strife and sectarian divide in Pakistan. And, terrorists are foreign-paid killers, having foreign agenda, while, Islam condemns terrorism in any form.

it is mentionable that Pakistan’s Armed Forces have almost defeated the ferocious terrorists, particularly of the TTP by clearing the areas of North Waziristan Agency by military operation Zarb-e-Azb which has broken the backbone of the insurgents, and is rapidly been achieving its objectives. The operation has full support of the civil government, opposition parties and Ulema including all other segments of society and general masses who are united against terrorism. In this regard, DG, ISPR Directorate, Major-Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa had stated, “Armed forces of Pakistan have launched the operation against terrorists…who had been waging a war against the state of Pakistan by disrupting our national life in all its dimensions…with the support of the entire nation, these enemies will be denied space across the country.”

Optimistically speaking, Pakistan can soon be on the road to prosperity, a secure country to invest, a peaceful place for tourists to visit, provided the terrorism which is mother of evils and sufferings is eliminated from its roots.
