290-feudalsPakistan’s  Feudal No.1 Asif Zardari has taken Sharukh Jatoi under his wing. He has ordered Karachi Police to push the Shahzaib Murder Case under the rug. Or iss ko Rafa-Dafa Kar doo.

Common citizens in Pakistan’s commercial capital of Karachi appear to have no safety of life as they reel under the corrupt, feudal-dominated Zardari government, a recent cold-blooded murder has bared.

Shahzeb Khan, 20, belonged to a family of police officers and was son of D.S.P. Aurangzeb Khan in Karachi. His late grandfather Shahjahan Khan was a famous police officer in Hyderabad.

However, his killer Shahrukh Jatoi, son of Sikandar Jatoi, a Sindhi feudal connected to President Asif Ali Zardari, has not been arrested yet despite passage of three days.

Jatoi murdered Shahzeb Khan in cold blood, according to Pakistan media reports.

The killer’s father Sikandar Jatoi was a feudal landlord from Sukkur but later became a “very rich contractor with all government officials in his pocket” after his friendship with Zardari.

The extremely handsome Shahzeb Khan was said to be immensely popular among the youths of Karachi. A Facebook page “In memory of Shahzeb Khan” had more than 34,000 members by Friday evening U.S. northeast time and hundreds of people were joining it every minute.By noon Saturday, the member numbers had crossed 44,000.

Shahzeb Khan, 20, belonged to a family of respected police officers. Both his father and late grandfather are and were police officers.

“Deeply disturbed to learn about the tragic cold blooded murder of young Shahzeb Khan in Karachi by kin of some ‘influential’ people,” Imran Khan, chief of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Imran Khan tweeted Friday.

“A classic example of how our ruling elite violates laws inc murder,” Khan added and urged his supporters to participate in the protest rally at the Karachi Press Club 3 pm Sunday.

A similar peaceful protest rally is being held at the Liberty Round About in Lahore on Sunday at 3 pm.

Shahzeb Khan was returning from his sister’s wedding to the family Country Club apartment in the Seaview township on Christmas night when he and another sister were harassed by Shahrukh Jatoi’s friend Nawab Siraj Talpur.

An argument ensued between the youths but D.S.P. Aurangzeb Khan and family elders of the Jatoi intervened to calm the youngsters.

However, after a few hours Shahrukh Jatoi shot dead Shahzeb Khan about 500 yards from the Country Club apartments.

The victim was closely related to member of the national assembly, Nabil Gabol.

Meanwhile, President Zardari officially passed on the mantel of the leadership of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party to his son Bilawal Zardari aka Billy Zardari on Thursday. Billy Zardari is said to be gay and this would be the first time a major political party in Pakistan will be led by a gay man

Question: Please give me the evidence about Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi in the light of Qur’an & Ahadith?

Answer

Before writing the arguments of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam), we want to clear the meaning of Milad according to literature and shariah.

The word Milad has been derived from “viladut” which means birth. Therefore, according to Arabic language, milad is a word which signifies the place and time of birth. In the light of shariah, we mean, Milad is to remember the events which took place at the birth time of the Nabi Akram (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) and we get the opportunity of narrating the seerat of the Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) on this occasion, we also presents the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) gifts of durood -o- salam. We mention before the people attributes and praises of the Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam). We do not believe that Milad is specified with same night but, we believe that the remembrance of the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is incumbent in each minute and second of time and every Muslim should act it sunnahs in the whole life time. Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is a great source of preaching. It is incumbent for scholars to teach Muslims nations on this Holy occasion, moral behavior of the Holy Nabi, (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) his antiquates, His affairs, His serat, His dealings and His worships.

Now, we write the proofs of Milad from the Holy Qur’an , the hadith of the Nabi Pak (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) and consensus of Ulema.

Evidence of the Holy Qur’an

The Qur’an ic ayats prove that to celebrate Milad is not only a proper deed but it is also praiseworthy.

1) Allah Ta’ala says in Qur’an :

The Salaam is on Him the day when he was born and the day when he will die and the day when he will be raised alive.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Al-Maryam, Ayat 15]

In the above ayat, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has mentioned the complete Milad of Hazrat Sayyidina Yahya (‘Alayhis-Salaam). And before this Allah Almighty has mentioned the events which took place before the birth. It is the same way of celebrating birth day as Ahlus-Sunnah adopts for the Milad of the last Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) of Allah Almighty. In other words the Nabiy-Allah, Hazrat Sayyidina Isa bin Maryam (‘Alayhis-Salaam) celebrate his own milad.

2) As Allah Almighty says:

And the same peace on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I would raised alive.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Al Maryum , Ayat 33]

Before this ayat, Allah Almighty has stated the whole story of Maryum (Alayhas-Salaam) that who she got pregnant and gave birth her great son, the Nabi of Allah, Sayyidina Isa (‘Alayhis-Salaam). Allah Almighty also mentioned the words of Sayyidina Isa (Alaihis Salam) by which Sayyidina Isa (Alaihis Salam) praised himself. This style of narrating story is nothing but celebration of Milad of Hazrat Sayyidina Isa, Alaihis Salam. Ahle Sunnat also narrate the story of Holy Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) in the same style. We too narrate the events which took place before the birth and after it as Allah Almighty narrated about Sayyidina Yahya and Sayyidina Isa (Alaihimus Salam). Therefore, a person who has eyes of justice, will obviously accept that to celebrate Milad is an important deed which Allah Almighty has done. So it proves that the bases of Milad is found in the Holy Qur’an.

3) Allah Almighty says:

And remind them of the days of the Allah.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Ibrahim, Ayat5]

In this ayat Allah Almighty orders his Nabi Musa ‘Alayhis-Salaam to remind his nation the days of Allah Almighty. “The days of Allah” are those days in which great events took place or Allah Almighty bestowed his great rewards to his creature. As the Holy Qur’an testifies this explanation of the days of Allah Almighty. In the Holy Qur’an, Sayyidina Musa Alaihis Salam says:

And when Musa said it his people remember Allah’s favor upon you, when he delivered you from Firawn’s people who used to afflict you worsly, and slaughter your sons and let your daughters live and in it there was shown great mercy of your lord.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Ibrahim , Ayat 6 ]

According to Allah’s Ayat, emancipation of the nation of Sayyidina Musa Alaihis Salam from Firawn is a day of Allah, so the birth day of the Holy Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) is, with any doubt, also a day of Allah, because the Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) emancipated whole world from the darkness of ignorance and brought them to the light of guidance. Therefore, the birthday (Milad) of the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) deserves to be celebrated then the celebration of any other event. In case we would not be grateful to Allah Almighty for his favor, that is Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). He will punish us severely . As Allah Almighty says :

And remember when your lord proclaimed, if you will be great full then I shall give you more and if your thankless then my treatment is severe.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Ibrahim , Ayat 7

4) Allah Almighty says :

Then remember the bounties of Allah and wander not in the earth spreading mischief.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Araf , Ayat 74]

In the above ayat Allah Almighty orders us to remember his bounties and rewards. The last Nabi of Allah Ta’ala, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is, undoubtedly, great blessing of Allah Almighty for whole mankind. Allah Almighty himself considers the Holy Last Messenger (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) his great favor for mankind as He says:

Undoubtedly, Allah did a great favor to the Muslims that in them from among themselves sent a messenger who recites unto them His Ayats and purifies them and teaches them the Kitab and Hikmah and necessarily before that they were certainly apparent error.”  [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Ale Imran , Ayat 164]

Therefor, according to Allah’s commandments in Holy Qur’an, we must remember the beloved Nabi of Allah, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) and Milad-un-Nabi is a best way of remembrance of the greatest Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). In other words, Allah Almighty says:

And publicize well the favor of your Rabb (lord)” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Al Duha , Ayat 11]

The Companion of the Holy Last Messenger (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) Hazrat Abdullah Ibne Abbas (Radhi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu) explained the word favors. He says here, “In this ayat favor signifies the Nubuwwat and al-Islam.” [Tafseer Ibne Abbas, Sure Al Duha, Page 651].

So in the light of the given explanation by the cousin of the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam), we can say that Allah Almighty orders us to remember Sayyidina Rasul-e-Akram (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) in our gatherings between the people, in our mosque between the worshiper and in our houses between our families and Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam), as I have written is a best way for this Qur’anic purpose.

4) Allah Almighty orders us :

Say you oly Allah’s grace and his mercy, on it therefore let them rejoice. That is better then all their wealth.

In this ayat, Allah Almighty orders us to enjoy on his grace and mercy. If we see around us we find that each favor of Allah Almighty is great mercy for us. Even our existence is also a mercy of Allah Almighty. But the greatest of Allah is the Holy Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him). As Allah Almighty says:

And we sent not you but as Rahmah for all worlds.” [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Al Ambiya, Ayat 107]

So according the Qur’anic teachings, it is necessary for us that we must be happy and pleased on the birthday of the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). The one who pleases with the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is really a true follower of the Holy Qur’an. And it is obvious that, in whole world Muslims celebrates Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). Especially for enjoying the mercy of Allah Almighty that is the beloved Nabi of Allah Almighty (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). Therefore the Holy Qur’an itself confirms the Milad un Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him).

5) The gathering of Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) incite Muslims on saying Darood and Salaam upon Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) Allah Almighty says:

Oh you who I believe send upon Him blessing and salute Him fully well in abundance. [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Al Ahzab , Ayat 56]

According to Shari’ah, a thing which is desired by Shari’ah, is exactly a like an aim of Shari’ah. And the benifit of durood-o-salam are so much in numbers that can not be counted. Durood-o-salam causes for the help of Allah Almighty in this world and here after. So milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is a source of fulfilling the commandments of Allah Almighty

6) Allah Almighty says:

And all that we narrate to you of the tidings of the messengers is for the purpose of strengthening your heart therewith. [Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Qur’an , Sura Hood, Ayat 121]

This Ayat ul-Karim reveals that the Hikmah of mentioning the stories and events of Nabiyyen (Alayhim Salaam ajma’in) was to stand fast the heart of the last Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). And it is obvious that we are, also today, in need of being stand fast. We must know that how, the Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) faced the problems of his time so that we may face the problems of our times according to the Sunnah. Therefore Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) provides us an opportunity to know about the affair of the Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam).

Evidence of Hadith

(Narrations of the Holy Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him)

There are many narrations, which proves the Milad sharif but I write a few.

1) The Nabi of Allah (Allahs Grace and Peace be upon him) himself stated his own birth from very beginning He says: “I had been transferred, continuously, from purified offspring to purified wombs. I had been given birth by a lawful marriage not by adultery. When Allah Almighty sent Adam Alaihis Salam on earth so He put me in his spine and then transferred in Nuh Alaihs salam in his boat, and then in Ibrahim Alaihis salam Allah Alighty transfered me continuesly from nobel offsprings to the purified wombs up to that He brought me in my parents who never committed adultery.” [Tafseer Ruhul biyan, Vol. 3, Page 54]

As we have written in the beginning that Milad means the time of birth or place of birth. So the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) himself celebrated his own Milad. In the same way Ahlus-Sunnah following the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) narrate the events of the birth of the Holy Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) .This hadith is the clear proof Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) and as well as tell us that to celebrate Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) is not innovation (bid’at) but it is a sunnah (tradition) of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam).

There are many other narrations which narrate that the Nabi of Allah (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) celebrate his own Milad several times, some of those narrations have been written in Mishkat Sharif.

2) The one who rejoices on the birth day of the Holy Nabi would not be severely punished and it is hopped that a Muslim who celebrate the Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam), will not be punished in hell. Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah Alaih narrates that Abu Lahab would be punished lightly in the Hell on Monday. Because he rejoiced and freed his handmaid indicating by his finger, when the Nabi of Allah Almighty (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) took birth. So as a reward of happiness on milad un Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) he would be given water by his finger. (Saheehul Bukhari Vol. 2, Page 764)

Imam shams ud din Naseer Al Damaishqi narrates this hadith in poetry. Here is its translation.

If such kafir was denounced (in the Qur’an )
And perished are his hands, and in the flame is his eternal abode.
It is narrated every Monday.
His torment is made easy for his joy at the birth of Ahmad. (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him)
What is the expectation then of a servant who spent all his life.
Happy with the arrival of Ahmad (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) and died on the one ness of Allah Almighty.(Haul-ul-Ahtifal Bil Maullid Al-Nabvi Al Sharif, Page 11)

2) The Holy Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) celebrated his own Milad by having fast. Imam Waliuddin write this narration with reference to the Sahee Muslim. When the Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) was asked about the fast of Monday. He (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) said:

I took birth and the Qur’an was revealed upon me in this day.” [Mishkat Sharif, Page 179]

This narration proves that to celebrate Milad un Nabi is a tradition of the Holy Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) on every Monday. Secondly, it is lawful to fix a particular day for Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam). Thirdly, it is an act ofsunnah to worship in the pleasure of the Milad un Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam)

Evidence of general consensus of Muslim ummah and scholars (Ulema)

1) Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Suyuti in his famous book “Al-Hawii Lil-Fatawii” allocated a special chapter on that topic and named it “The Excellence of Objective in Celebrating the Mawlid” where he said: The question under consideration is what the verdict of the Shari’ah on celebrating the Holy Birthday of the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) during the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. From the point of view of Shari’ah is this a praiseworthy action or a blameworthy one? And do those who arrange such celebration Receive blessings or not? He said:

The reply to this question is that in my view the Meelad Shareef (Celebration of the Birthday of the Noble Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallamon Him) is in fact such an occasion of happiness on which people assemble and recite the Holy Qu’ran to the extent that is easy. Then they relate the prophecies concerning the appearance of the Noble Nabi (Allah’s Grace & Peace be upon Him) that have been transmitted in Ahadith and Author, and the miraculous events and signs that took place on his birth. Then food is set before them and according to their desire they partake thereof to satisfaction. This festival of celebrating the birthday of the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) is a Bid’ah Hasanah (good Innovation) and those arranging it will get blessing, since in such a celebration is found the expression of joy and happiness at the greatness and eminence of the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) and his birth“.

Even Ibn Taymiyyah said in his book “Necessity of the Right Path“, p. 266, 5th line from the bottom of that page, published by Dar Al-Hadith, the following:

“As far as what people do during the Meelad, either as a rival celebration to that which the Christian do during the time of Christ’s birthday or as an expression of their love and admiration and a sign of praise for the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam), Allah Almighty will surely reward them for such Ij’tiha”.

He (Ibn Taymiyyah) then said:

“Although Meelad was not practiced by (Salaf), they should have done so since there was no objection against it from the Shari’ah point of view.”

And we certainly only celebrate Meelad out of love and admiration to the Nabi of all Mankind.

2. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Qastalani, who gave commentary on Sahih Bukhari, said:

“May Allah Almighty shower his Mercy upon a person who takes the days of the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal, in which the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam) was born, as days of feast and celebration for doing so is the best cure for the heart of an ailing person.”

3. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was asked, same reference of Imam Suyuti, about Meelad Shareef. His reply was:

“Meelad Shareef is, in fact, and innovation, which was not transmitted from any pious predecessor in the first three centuries. Nevertheless, both acts of virtue as well as acts of abomination are found in it (i.e. Sometimes acts of virtue are found therein and sometimes acts of abomination). If in the Meelad Shareef only acts of virtue are done and acts of abomination are abstained from, then the Meelad Shareef is a Bid’ah Hasanah (good innovation), otherwise not.”

He then added:

“To do any virtuous act and to observe it annually as means of recollection for any special day on which Allah Almighty has bestowed any favor or removed any calamity is a form of showing gratitude to Allah Almighty. Gratitude to Allah Almighty is expressed through different kinds of Ibaadah (worship) -prostration and standing in prayer, charity and recitation of the Holy Qu’ran. And what is a greater favor from Allah Almighty can there be than the appearance of the Nabi of Mercy (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallamon Him) on this day (i.e. 12th of Rabbi-ul-Awwal)?”

Some people do not limit it and celebrate the Meelad Shareef on any day of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. Nay, some people have extended it even more and increased the period to the whole year. According to the latter, the Meelad Shareef can be celebrated on any day of the year. The objective here is the same, i.e. to rejoice at and celebrate the Holy Birth of the Nabi Akram (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam).

4. Imam Abu-Bakr Abdullah Al-Demashqi compiled a number of books on the subject and called them “Collection of Traditions on the Birth of the Chosen Nabi“, “The Pure Expression on the Birthday of the Best of Creations” and “The Spring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided“.

5. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Iraqi wrote a book and called it “The Pure Spring on the Sublime Birth“.

6. Imam Ibn Dahyah wrote a book and called it “Enlightenment on the Birthday of the Bearer of Good News, The Warner“.

7. Imam Mulla Ali Qari wrote a book and called it “The Quenching Spring on the Birthday of the Nabi“.(Sallallahu alayhi waSallam)

8. Imam Shams Ul-Din bin Naser Al-Dumashqi, said in his book: “The Spring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided” about the story of Abu Lahab that he will receive a light punishment every Monday for expressing joy at the birth of the Noble Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallamon him) on that day. The Imam said the following verse of poetry, the translation is: If such Kafir was denounced in the ( Qur’an ) and perished are his hands, and in the Flames is his eternal abode It is narrated that every Monday.

His torment is made easy for his Joy at the Birth of Ahmad What is the expectation then of a servant who spent all his life Happy with the Arrival of Ahmad (Sallallahu alayhi waSallam)and died on the Oneness of Allah.

9. Imam Shams Ul-Din Ibn al-Jazri, the Imam of reciters, wrote a book and named it “The Scent of Notification on the Blessed Birthday“.

10. Imam Al-Hafiz Ibn Al-Jawzi, said in the description of Meelad: “Peace and Tranquillity takes over during that year and a good glad tiding to obtain your wish and inspiration.”

11. Imam Abu-Shamah, The Sheik of Al Hafiz Al Nawawi, said:

“The best of the innovations of our times is what is carried out on the day of corresponding to the birthday of our Beloved Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam), where people give out donations, practice what is right, express their joy and happiness, in doing so is surely a sign of love and admiration for the Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam)”.

KAMRAN FAISAL MURDER : DID THE GOVT ORDER THE EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLING OF RAJA “RENTAL”PERVEZ’S POWER PLANT NAB INVESTIGATOR?

This is a story of a historical murder ordered by a Fascist French government in the 1930s.  It is also a classic example of how corrupt fascists operate and how they use violence as a means to an end. Raja “Rental” Pervez is a fascist. It is not beyond reason, that Raja “Rental”Pervez, is connected with the order murder NAB, investigator. Kamran Faisal had information which would have resulted in long term jail sentence to Raja “Rental”Pervez  Ashraf.  His ilk, once cornered resort to violence. They are worse than blood sucking vampire bats. Once, exposed to light, they try all means to hide themselves. This Count Dracula of Corruption is a gift to the nation by none other than, the Demon of Corruption, the civilian dictator, Asif Zardari.   Ashraf is not only a bugling stooge, prone to violence but also  a hatchet man for Asif Zardari. He has risen from the lower middle class of Pakistan, to reach meteoric heights; through adeptness as a strong hatchet man for Asif Zardari.   Unlike, Z.A.Bhutto, who was hanged on very specious evidence, Raja “Rental” Pervez is right up to his neck in the Rental Power Scandal.  Rather he is the lead character and the main beneficiary of over $600 Million graft given by IPPs. It stands to reason that his culpability is obvious in this not only sordid but also grisly affair .

Kamran Faisal’s murder also has as many similarities to the mysterious death of
Laetitia Toureaux on Paris Metro, which happened under similar circumstances in another era.  Laetitia was also eliminated, because, she knew too much, and as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Kamran also paid dearly for the knowledge he held on the High and the Mighty Ministers of Pakistan’s corrupt and US supported government.

Kamran Faisal was a man of integrity, honesty, and, as his father said, served only one Master, The Allah Almighty.  His aging father, an honest, soft spoken, and deeply religious man spoke of his son’s deep sense of commitment responsibility to the nation.  Kamran loved his job and was serving the people of Pakistan and earning Rizq-i-Halal. A rarity indeed in an abjectly dishonest society like Pakistan.  His misfortune was that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time He was investigating the fraud perpetrated by a malevolent crook, masquerading as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Raja “Rental ” Pervez Ashraf, whose loyalty lies with the Don Corleone of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari.  A curse imposed a US government on the Pakistani nation; and also known to the global community as  Mr.Ten Percent.

Mysterious deaths of honest investigation officers have happened through out history. Chile’s Dictator, Gen.Augusto Pinochet, had death squads at his service. They eliminated any civil servant, who tried to expose or speak against the corruption in Chilean government . Pakistan has now become, the proverbial Pinochet ruled, Chilean model Banana Republic. It is ruled by Knights of Corruption, who have spread their cancerous tentacles of corruption infesting all sectors of Pakistan’s economy and commerce.

Pakistan’s civil society, which had so valiantly marched for the restoration of Chief Justice; is now in cahoots with the government. Its stalwarts are appearing on every TV channel, vehemently defending the corrupt government in coded terms, by saying, that they “were defending democracy.” What democracy? A democracy led by feudal elites and industrialist merchants, who flaunt all national and international laws. They do not pay taxes but enjoy the privileges and immunities of tax paying wage earners like the Pakistan Armed Forces.

An insidiously corrupt government, like that of PM Raja “Rental” Ashraf can do anything it likes. It has no accountability either to the people or the Judiciary, whom, they mock day in and day out.  Now, they have resorted to extrajudicial killings. The precedence for extrajudicial killings has been set by the MQM, a murder for hire organization in Karachi.  The culture of murder has now reached Islamabad.  It is already a norm in metropolitan Karachi, where MQM, reigns terror on ordinary defenseless Karachiites. Karachi’s killing fields have now been transplanted in Islamabad.  It seems, although, Kamran Faisal’s murder will NEVER be solved. Because, those in-charge of the murder investigations are also the perpetrators of the murder. These criminal murderers, go by such names as Pakistan Peoples Party, MQM, and PML(Q). But, those who live by the sword also die by the sword.  They are sure to be meted out Justice, if not Here, then in the Hereafter.   Pakistan is ruled by a Gang of Murders and Extortionists led by Numero Uno, Asif Zardari.    Such rulers can never be brought to justice, except by an Act of Almighty God. His name is also, Al-Adl, the Just. Accountability in the Hereafter, results in punishment forever, as embedded in Islam. It is the faith, Asif Zardari and Pervez Ashraf, claim to follow. Unless, they, are again being hypocritical. Or they consider Islam, as a mumbo jumbo confined to this world. That would be their biggest mistake for which there will not be any expiation or forgiveness.

On the 16th of May, 1937, at around 6 p.m., a striking, 29-year-old Italian woman wearing a finely tailored green suit, white hat and gloves left a suburban Paris bal musette, or dance hall, and walked quickly toward a bus stop. Approximately 24 minutes later, she stepped off the bus and entered a metro station where she boarded a first-class car bound for central Paris. Although the subway platform and the accompanying second-class cars were filled with Pentecost Sunday holiday-makers who had spent the afternoon at the Parc de Vincennes, Laetitia Nourrissat Toureaux sat alone in her first-class car. The train departed at 6:26 p.m., and 45 seconds later arrived at the Porte Dorée station where six passengers entered the first-class car and beheld a shocking sight. In front of their eyes, the woman in the green suit fell forward out of her seat, revealing a 9-inch dagger buried in her neck.

0Metro authorities immediately summoned the Paris police and emergency personnel, but Laetitia Toureaux died before she ever reached the Saint-Antoine Hospital and without ever naming her assailant. The judicial section of the Paris police force, known as the Sûreté Nationale, immediately launched an inquiry into the murder. Over the next 12 months they interviewed more than 800 people who either knew Toureaux or who had been at the dance hall, bus stop or subway platform with her on the day of her death. The police never found a single witness to the crime, however, and eventually shelved the investigation. To this day, the murder of Laetitia Toureaux remains officially unsolved, a seemingly “perfect crime.”

The paradox of Toureaux’s murder is that by mid-January of 1938 the Paris police and even the journalists, who were just as determined to solve the mystery of her death, had little doubt about who had killed her. The murder was connected to the assassinations of three prominent figures: the Russian economist Dimitri Navachine, stabbed to death in the Bois-de-Boulogne on Jan. 26, 1937; and the Italian antifascist exiles Carlo and Nello Rosselli, gunned down on a road in Normandy on June 9, 1937. Police eventually traced all three assassination cases to an extreme right-wing organization called the Comité Secret d’Action Révolutionnaire (CSAR) and popularly dubbed the “Cagoule,” or “hooded ones,” because of their penchant for donning hoods when they needed to hide their identities. The Cagoule favored violence and planned a paramilitary coup to oust the socialist “Popular Front” government of the late 1930s before installing a military-style dictatorship in preparation for the return of the French monarchy.

CSAR leadership included former army and naval officers, engineers, doctors and industrialists, many of whom belonged to some of the most distinguished families in France. The organization was well-funded by the heads of major companies like Michelin, L’Oréal and Lesieur Oil and had some support within the French armed forces. The Cagoule had no true ideology but expounded a vehement nationalist, anti-communist, anti-socialist, anti-democratic and anti-Semitic stance. During the period 1936-37, the Cagoule committed a number of serious crimes that included two bombings in Paris, at least seven murders and the destruction of several airplanes bound for anti-Franco forces in Spain. They incited public riots and on more than one occasion attempted the assassination of the socialist leader and Popular Front prime minister, Léon Blum. In Paris, members of the Cagoule also formed militias, amassed huge stockpiles of weapons, trained terrorists, built underground prisons, sought support from Mussolini and ran guns in Belgium, Switzerland and Italy. Cagoulard cells also existed in the French provinces.

The French police exposed the CSAR on the night of Nov. 15, 1937. Several of those arrested claimed knowledge of Toureaux’s murder and provided testimony about her assassination. Additional circumstantial evidence also pointed to her involvement with the Cagoule. Apparently, she was murdered because she had infiltrated the Cagoule as an undercover agent. When the Cagoulard leadership discovered her betrayal, they had her executed. But if the police suspected this, why was Laetitia Toureaux’s murder never solved?

The CSAR was a clandestine operation with a strict code of secrecy. Its right-wing orientation arose out of hostility toward the Socialist government of Léon Blum during a time of rising unemployment, massive labor unrest and general post-World War I malaise. Its leader, Eugène Deloncle, boasted that by 1937, 12,000 men in Paris had joined the Cagoule and 120,000 belonged to the organization in the provinces. At most, the Cagoule probably consisted of fewer than 200 known affiliates who had some sense of the true Cagoulard structure and mission, and anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand who were tied to the CSAR through other organizations or associations. Most believed they had joined an auto-defense organization meant to spring into action in the event of a communist uprising, a misconception the Cagoule’s leaders actively fostered. Recruits joined seven-man cells linked by vertical ties to units, battalions, regiments, brigades and divisions. There were no horizontal ties in the organizational structure, however, so that no relationship existed between cells. In the end, the police arrested only 71 members of the Cagoule in 1937-38. Those imprisoned were eventually released in 1939 when France mobilized for war. The case against the CSAR did not come to trial until 1948. By then many of those charged were distinguished war veterans. Most had found important places in the Vichy regime and/or ended the war as part of the French Resistance. Few were punished for their prewar crimes, and in the rush for postwar reconciliation in France, the murder of Laetitia Toureaux was largely forgotten.

The Cagoule leadership were simply too important to punish for the death of an Italian immigrant of questionable reputation. A case in point involves the late French President François Mitterand, who never belonged to the Cagoule, but developed close ties in his youth to many in its ranks.  Mitterand steadfastly refused to discuss his Cagoulard ties during his long presidency, but he clearly knew of the Cagoule’s prewar crimes and chose to ignore them. Laetitia Toureaux’s story, therefore, forms part of the larger French refusal to come to terms with the pre-World War II era when many French sympathized with extreme right-wing politics, fascism and anti-Semitism. Indeed, it can be argued that Vichy France was the fulfillment of right-wing agendas.

By retracing Toureaux’s life and death in a historical monograph, we intend not only to tell a good story and solve a murder, but also juxtapose the worlds of working-class immigrant culture and upper-class French society in order to craft a portrait of French politics and culture in the 1930s. Toureaux’s story thus becomes the lens through which we view French society during a turbulent time when many in France flirted dangerously close with fascism.

Who Was Laetitia Toureaux?

The morning after the murder, “Le Crime du Métro” made sizzling front-page copy in all the papers as Parisians awoke to the shocking news that a beautiful young woman was brutally killed on a subway train. Paris was abuzz with curiosity about the crime and its victim. The doctor who performed the autopsy on Toureaux’s body theorized that the blow that killed her had severed her jugular vein so perfectly that only a professional assassin could have done it. But what did this clue indicate about Toureaux’s background and lifestyle?

In the weeks that followed her demise, the Parisian newspapers and scandal sheets sensationalized the murder and its investigation, little by little uncovering the details of Toureaux’s unconventional life and offering hypotheses on her untimely death. In the first few days after the murder, the journalists and the Parisian public viewed Toureaux as an innocent, an ingénue perhaps, but a respectable, recently widowed immigrant who was a victim of cruel fate. Five days after the murder, however, public opinion turned against her. Exposed as an ambitious social climber with a taste for money and adventure, her marriage to the late Jules Toureaux was revealed to be a clandestine relationship. His scandalized bourgeois family only learned of the union on his deathbed and unsurprisingly severed all legal ties with his working-class wife. Toureaux’s lifestyle also had been unsavory, for like many Italians living in France, she frequented bals musette, often located in the most sordid neighborhoods of Paris where pimps and prostitutes solicited customers. Toureaux lived a mysterious and exciting life and was known to acquaintances by another name, “Yolande.” The police learned that she had sexual encounters with men in hotels and public parks, but they never uncovered any evidence that she charged for sex. Faithful to her husband during their six-year secret marriage, she took a series of lovers from her milieu after his death in 1934.

Even more intriguing, Toureaux not only worked in a glue factory by day and a bal musette by night, she also gained intermittent employment as a sometime “mouche,” or informant, with a detective agency in central Paris called Agence Rouff, where she specialized in surveillance and message delivery. Much of her detective work was done in the bals musette. Her beauty was her greatest asset since her good looks gave her entry into many places and access to people she was expected to watch. Through her employer, Georges Rouffinac, it appears that she began working unofficially for the investigative division of the Paris police and in this capacity infiltrated the Cagoule. Late in his life, her former lover and Cagoule member, Gabriel Jeantet, told a reporter that she had been something of a double agent in the employ of Mussolini, but no documentation to this effect has ever been found.

So Why Was Laetitia Killed?

Laetitia Toureaux loved to dance, and as a dancer she met many young army officers who were attracted to right-wing politics. It appears that sometime in 1936, Laetitia, now known as “Yolande” and working for the police to infiltrate illegal, right-wing political groups, became the lover of Jeantet, the Cagoule’s arms smuggling expert. Jeantet ran a garage near Montmarte and commanded a fleet of cars he used to smuggle arms from Geneva to Paris. By the spring of 1937, the Cagoule began to suspect Toureaux of deceit and set a trap for her. News of an upcoming arms run was leaked to her, but when the car was stopped at the Swiss border, it was empty. The ruse cost Toureaux her life. The Cagoule leadership met on May 10, 1937, and determined her fate. In all probability, the group’s most notorious assassin, Jean Filliol, was ordered to kill her. Filliol proceeded to pull off the perfect crime and fled to Spain before World War II broke out. He finished his life a rich man near San Sebastian.

Why Tell Laetitia Toureaux’s Story Now?

Laetitia Toureaux’s story is both timely and compelling. A 500-page summary of the investigation compiled by the police a few months after her death paints a fascinating picture of one woman’s struggle to achieve bourgeois respectability in a world that denied upward mobility to people of her sex, class and ethnicity. Her murder is also intertwined with the history of French fascism. The Cagoule leaders were not street thugs but highly educated nationalists who used terrorism, particularly the bombing of two sites in the wealthy 16th district of Paris – ironically, on Sept. 11, 1937 – as a means of sending a message to the French public. On this particular 9/11, they hoped to fool the public into believing that a communist putsch was imminent and thereby hasten the fall of the Third Republic. Historians, however, seldom give more than summary attention to the Cagoule’s prewar aims. Ultimately the Cagoule failed to bring about regime change and install an ultraconservative state. Even so, their use of violence as a means of promoting disorder in 1937 has never been fully examined. A reassessment of the CSAR could aid understanding of France’s fall in 1940. At the very least, such a study provides insight into how terrorist cells operate, incite fear, and as Americans know only too well, change history.

And in the end, what do we make of Laetitia Toureaux, the woman who gives us access to those violent times? Reconstructing her life was no easy task. The files concerning her murder were sealed by the French government for 101 years and are not due to be released until 2038. We acquired legal derogations and gained access to many of these files but only after signing documents in which we promised never to compromise the names of leading French families. In many instances, files we sought vanished “without explanation.” A five-year search finally turned up the police archives that we were repeatedly told did not exist. More than one French archivist warned us not to pursue this research.

In 1997 we set out to find Toureaux’s grave. There in the stillness of a cemetery on the outskirts of Paris, we vowed to this woman to tell her story. Laetitia “Yolande” Toureaux was no heroine, but she embodied many of the complexities of interwar French society. In 2002 the lease expired on her grave plot, and her body was exhumed and cremated. In some sense, we believe, the publication of our book will reanimate and validate her existence.

In 1997 Annette Finley-Croswhite, associate professor and dean of graduate studies in the College of Arts and Letters, happened onto two or three sentences in a Paris travel guide about a 1937 unsolved murder in the capital city’s subway. That reading would lead to an eight-year project that is now drawing to an end. Finley-Croswhite and fellow researcher Gayle Brunelle, whom she had met in graduate school at Emory University and who now teaches at California State University, Fullerton, agreed that the story was too good to pass up. Although both are French historians whose specialty is the 16th century, they “retooled” themselves to write about this fascinating piece of history from the 20th century. They published a major article in the journal French Cultural Studies, “Murder in the Metro,” and have spoken about it at several conferences. After years of research, they have produced a manuscript, titled “Laetitia Toureaux and the Cagoule: Murder, Gender, and Fascism in 1937 France.” The subject of the scholarly work remains highly controversial, and many people in France would prefer that the story be forgotten. As dedicated historians and researchers, however, Finley-Croswhite and Brunelle couldn’t let that happen.

CORRUPTION-RAIWIND STYLE

Nawaz Sharif’s Corruption highlighted in Raymond Baker’s book on Dirty Money
Raymond Baker in his book Capitalism’s Achilles HeelDirty Money and How to Renew the Free-Market System tried to understand the dynamics of how dirty money works.

Corruption and criminality run from the top down, with the political class constantly looting the national treasury and distorting economic policy for personal gain. Bank loans are granted largely on the basis of status and connections. The rich stash much of their money abroad in those willing western coffers, while exhibiting little inclination to repay their rupee borrowings. Pakistan’s recent history has been dominated by two families—the Bhuttos and the Sharifs—both merely tolerated by the military, the real power in the country. When it comes to economic destruction, there’s not a lot of difference among the three.

Pages 82-85 of the book cover the section on Nawaz Sharif: While Benazir Bhutto hated the generals for executing her father, Nawaz Sharif early on figured out that they held the real power in Pakistan. His father had established a foundry in 1939 and, together with six brothers, had struggled for years only to see their business nationalized by Ali Bhutto’s regime in 1972. This sealed decades of enmity between the Bhuttos and the Sharifs. Following the military coup and General Zia’s assumption of power, the business—Ittefaq—was returned to family hands in 1980.Nawaz Sharif became a director and cultivated relations with senior military officers. This led to his appointment as finance minister of Punjab and then election as chief minister of this most populous province in 1985. During the 1980s and early 1990s, given Sharif ’s political control of Punjab and eventual prime ministership of the country, Ittefaq Industries grew from its original single foundry into 30 businesses producing steel, sugar, paper, and textiles, with combined revenues of $400 million, making it one of the biggest private conglomerates in the nation. As in many other countries, when you control the political realm, you can get anything you want in the economic realm.
With Lahore, the capital of Punjab, serving as the seat of the family’s power, one of the first things Sharif did upon becoming prime minister in 1990 was build his long-dreamed-of superhighway from there to the capital,Islamabad. Estimated to cost 8.5 billion rupees, the project went through two biddings. Daewoo of Korea, strengthening its proposals with midnight meetings, was the highest bidder both times, so obviously it won the contract and delivered the job at well over 20 billion rupees.
A new highway needs new cars. Sharif authorized importation of 50,000 vehicles duty free, reportedly costing the government $700 million in lost customs duties. Banks were forced to make loans for vehicle purchases to would-be taxi cab drivers upon receipt of a 10 percent deposit.Borrowers got their “Nawaz Sharif cabs,” and some 60 percent of them promptly defaultedThis left the banks with $500 million or so in unpaid loans. Vehicle dealers reportedly made a killing and expressed their appreciation in expected ways. Under Sharif, unpaid bank loans and massive tax evasion remained the favorite ways to get rich. Upon his loss of power the usurping government published a list of 322 of the largest loan defaulters, representing almost $3 billion out of $4 billion owed to banks. Sharif and his family were tagged for $60 million. The Ittefaq Group went bankrupt in 1993 when Sharif lost his premiership the first time. By then only three units in the group were operational, and loan defaults of the remaining companies totaled some 5.7 billion rupees, more than $100 million.
Like Bhutto, offshore companies have been linked to Sharif, three in the British Virgin Islands by the names of Nescoll, Nielson, and Shamrock and another in the Channel Islands known as Chandron Jersey Pvt. Ltd. Some of these entities allegedly were used to facilitate purchase of four rather grand flats on Park Lane in London, at various times occupied by Sharif family members. Reportedly, payment transfers were made to Banque Paribas en Suisse, which then instructed Sharif ’s offshore companies Nescoll and Nielson to purchase the four luxury suites.
In her second term, Benazir Bhutto had Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency begin a probe into the financial affairs of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The probe was headed by Rehman Malik, deputy director general of the agency. Malik had fortified his reputation earlier by aiding in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. During Sharif ’s second term, the draft report of the investigation was suppressed, Malik was jailed for a year, and later reportedly survived an assassination attempt, after which he fled to London. The Malik report, five years in the making, was released in 1998, with explosive revelations:
The records, including government documents, signed affidavits from Pakistani officials, bank files and property records, detail deals that Mr. Malik says benefited Mr. Sharif, his family and his political associates:

  • At least $160 million pocketed from a contract to build a highway from Lahore, his home town, to Islamabad, the nation’s capital.
  • At least $140 million in unsecured loans from Pakistan’s state banks.
  • More than $60 million generated from government rebates on sugar exported by millscontrolled by Mr. Sharif and his business associates.
  • At least $58 million skimmed from inflated prices paid for imported wheat from the United States and Canada. In the wheat deal, Mr. Sharif ’s government paid prices far above market value to a private company owned by a close associate of his in Washington, the records show. Falsely inflated invoices for the wheat generated tens of millions of dollars in cash.

The report went on to state that “The extent and magnitude of this corruption is so staggering that it has put the very integrity of the country at stake.” In an interview, Malik added: “No other leader of Pakistan has taken that much money from the banks. There is no rule of law in Pakistan. It doesn’t exist.
What brought Sharif down in his second term was his attempt to acquire virtually dictatorial powers. In 1997 he rammed a bill through his compliant parliament requiring legislators to vote as their party leaders directed. In 1998 he introduced a bill to impose Sharia law (Muslim religious law) across Pakistan, with himself empowered to issue unilateral directives in the name of Islam. In 1999 he sought to sideline the army by replacing Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf with a more pliable crony. He forgot the lessons he had learned in the 1980s: The army controls Pakistan and politicians are a nuisance. As Musharraf was returning from Sri Lanka, Sharif tried to sack him in midair and deny the Pakistan International Airways flight with 200 civilians on board landing rights in Karachi. Musharraf radioed from the aircraft through Dubai to his commander in Karachi, ordering him to seize the airport control tower, accomplished as the plane descended almost out of fuel. Musharraf turned the tables and completed his coup, and Sharif was jailed.
But Sharif had little to fear. This, after all, is Pakistan. Musharraf needed to consolidate his power with the generals, and Sharif knew details about the corruption of most of the brass. Obviously, it is better to tread lightly around the edges of your peer group’s own thievery. So Musharraf had Sharif probed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, but then in 2000 exiled him to Saudi Arabia.Twenty-two containers of carpets and furniture followed, and, of course, his foreign accounts remained mostly intact. Ensconced in a glittering palace in Jeddah, he is described as looking “corpulent” amidst “opulent” surroundings. Reportedly, he and Benazir Bhutto even have an occasional telephone conversation, perhaps together lamenting how unfair life has become.
