ISLAMABAD: A new NRO between PML-N and PPP has almost been finalized under which former President Asif Ali Zardari will arrive in Pakistan and will be free to travel on his own will without facing any case pending against him.

“Both the parties have agreed on the NRO which will become effective with the return of Zardari on 23rd of this month,” sources privy to the political developments said.

These sources said, according to the agreement Mr Zardari will be allowed to come to Pakistan and not face any of cases pending against him, cases against Dr. Asim Hussain will be settled and ultimately he will be freed, settle the case of Model Ayan Ali, and removal of Interior Minister, Chaudry Nisar Ali Khan or at least changing his Ministry. However, these sources maintained, that no agreement has been reached so far on the issue of Ch Nisar.

“Although PPP Chairman Bilawal  Zardari has been propagating four other points in his public meetings and press conferences but in reality the situation is different as PPP, in fact, has been negotiating with the Government on the above-mentioned issues,” these sources said, adding, “Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar has actually played key role in negotiating the reconciliation process with the PPP”.

The sources said that Ch. Nisar still remains the main obstacle in reaching a conclusion in the so-called NRO between the two political parties. “Ch Nisar was firm on his stand that PPP leaders must face courts to get a clean chit and the Government may not extend any facility to the former President and ensure non-interference in Dr. Asim and Ayan Ali cases,” the sources maintained.

These sources said the Ch. Nisar asserted that the Government should not facilitate Mr. Asif Ali Zardari and he must appear before the courts to prove his innocence. “On the other hand, Mr. Ishaq Dar was of the view that PPP extended full cooperation to PML-N during the tough times the government faced during last three and a half years and never created hurdles, therefore, it is time for the PML-N to pay back and win the support of PPP in the emerging political scenario,” the sources said, adding, “the opinion of Ishaq Dar finally prevailed and the issues were settled down that led to agreeing on the NRO with PPP”.

“The Government has so far not agreed to remove Chaudhry Nisar, as apparently, Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif is not willing to replace Ch. Nisar or change his Ministry despite heavy pressure from his allies including Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and Mehmood Khan Achakzai on the issue fake registration of Afghan refugees,” the sources concluded.

Plea for thumbprint verification in all constituencies

ISLAMABAD: Another petition alleging rigging in the May general elections was filed in the Supreme Court on Friday.

The plea sought a court order for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to carry out verification of thumb impressions of voters in all constituencies.

imgresThe petition moved by Advocate Tariq Asad on behalf of Kalsoom Akhtar, who is also a lawyer, said the verification should start from the constituencies from where Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the four chief ministers, speakers and the leaders of opposition in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies had been elected.

The federal government through secretaries of law and interior, the ECP and the National Database and Registration Authority have been named as respondents in the petition.

“If rigging is proved in these constituencies, the entire exercise of voters’ verification be repeated in other important constituencies and so on to uphold democracy,” said the petition, adding that people were perturbed at large-scale rigging, leaving a stigma that the prime minister and the chief ministers might have been also elected in a non-transparent manner.

It said the allegations of rigging had also created doubts about the future of democracy which might be restored only by satisfying the people that their representatives were elected though free and fair elections. “Democracy needs to be strengthened in order to safeguard political stability and confidence in the minds of people.

” The petition said the PTI had demanded that the ECP be held accountable for rigging in the elections and also threatened to launch a countrywide protest campaign.

Moreover, it said, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali  had admitted in the National Assembly that 40 to 50 per cent rigging had taken place in almost all constituencies.

Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd): Ziarat Residency

LETTER TO EDITOR

June 15th, 2013

Ziarat Residency

It was indeed shocking and agonising to see the historic residency reduced to the ashes and along with it the invaluable heritage and many a rare memorabilia of the Father of the Nation lost to the nation for ever.  As if the agony was not enough that to add salt to the injury some sycophant newspaper came up with a headline that Ch. Nisar has ordered to restore the residency to its original form and appearance.  Bravo !! Who is Ch. Nisar and in what capacity he has ‘ordered’ it to be restored as such?  Is he going to spend the money from his pocket on the restoration of the residency?  If not, then why not say that the government has decided to restore the residency.  Why name an individual? When will we learn to rise above such self styled personal adulation and adoration and that too at the cost of the national calamities? Also would it not be the purview of some Ministry of Works and Housing etc. instead of the Interior to undertake t he restoration ?  Would it not be the Ministry of Culture and Heritage (whatever the actual name) that would know what to replace and replicate and how than the Ministry of the Interior?

Chaudhry Sahib you better concentrate on what is your duty and that is to ENSURE the safety of life and property of all citizens of Pakistan than restoring the damaged properties.  It would be quite an achievement for you to accomplish even an iota of what is required of you.
