Real Democracy

The PPP and PPP-P have set a real good example for all to follow by holding their intra party elections.  It’s another matter that no one offered to stand against the father(Zardari) and the son (Bilawal). But could they be blamed for it?

First Lady – Kulsoom Nawaz Rs 2,500,000 Yves St Laurent Purse

LETTER TO EDITOR

Kulsoom Nawaz Rs 2,500,000 Yves St Laurent Purse

Kulsoom Nawaz Rs 2,500,000 Yves St Laurent Purse

First Lady

During the meeting between Mrs. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan  (the visiting First Lady of Turkey) and Mrs. Kalsoom Nawaz, with a Rs 2,500,000 Yves St Laurent Purse; the later was also being referred to as the First Lady (of Pakistan).  This became rather conspicuous when during the meeting with the wife of the Pakistan president, she was just referred to as Mrs. Mamnoon only. As per the universal protocol the First Lady is the wife of the Head of the State (President) and not that of the Head of the Government. However, Pakistan is the only country in the world where it is the other way around. This strange practice owes it birth to ZAB who while stepping down from the presidency to the premiership in 1972 brought all the presidential (Head of the State) protocol with him to the PM House.  It included flying of Pakistan Flag on his car, playing of the National Anthem on his official appearances, a Brigadier/Major General  Military Secretary, a couple of ADCs (grammatically AsDC) and similar some other presidential perks and privileges of course not forgetting the First Lady. In no other democratic country of the world including India the PM is entitled to any such privileges. But the Pakistan is Pakistan.

Incidentally, what if the wife happens to be the PM like Benazir Bhutto ?  Was AAZ called as the First Gentleman ?!

Enough is Enough by Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

Enough is Enough

Now that India has herself brought the Kashmir issue under international focus by stupidly claiming to have carried out surgical strikes against us, which has appropriately alarmed the world powers of its escalation into a fully fledged war between the two nuclear neighbouring states, Pakistan should make the most of this opportunity to its full advantage and to the advantage of our Kashmiri brethren.  In that an all out effort be made to demand the Plebiscite under the 1948 UN Resolution to settle the 68 year old long long outstanding dispute between the two countries due to which three conventional wars have already been fought and the fourth one that could be nuclear is in the offing. The very thought of such a war is horrendous as it would not remain confined to the subcontinent only but could engulf most of the rest of world also.  Along with it Pakistan must demand of India to stop the most inhumane kind of atrocities being perpetrated by the Indian armed fo! rces upon the helpless unarmed Kashmiris where even  old men, women and children are not being spared.  Pakistan must boldly and unequivocally make it known to the Indians in particular and the world powers in general that from here onwards Pakistan will lend its full moral, psychological and relief support in all forms and kinds to the Kashmiris across the border.  As a starters Pakistan could ask India to allow it an air corridor for its C-130 aircraft to drop relief goods and supplies to the beleaguered Kashmiris who are under the 80th day of the curfew imposed upon them.  It is high time that we also showed our some muscle to our adversary who is now talking of stopping our waters and isolating us from the comity of the nations.  I think time has come to call “Enough is Enough”.

Pillion Riding and Target Killing

The serpent of target killing has risen its deadly head once again killing 7 policemen in Karachi.  The eight killers on four motorbikes made good their escape as usual and probably would never be tracked down like scores of them before.  It is a too well-known phenomenon that 99.9 per cent of all such target killing is done by the killers on a motorbike. There are always two of them riding together, one doing the shooting and the other driving the bike. Since a motorbike is a small, handy and extremely maneuverable vehicle the killers weave their way through the heavy traffic and vanish in the nearby streets/bye lanes easily.

One just wonders as to why such a simple fact is not being understood by the law enforcing authorities and the Pillion Riding is not banned in cities where required.  I know it would be hard on many and to ease it to some extent children under 12 and the ladies without veils could be exempted from such a ban.  Only two male adults should not be allowed to ride on a motorbike together.  As I said it will cause inconvenience to many and quite an uproar could come about amongst the commuters, but at times one has to take a bitter pill to eradicate the bigger menace.

For the information of all during the pre-partitioned and even early days of Pakistan ‘doubling’ on a bicycle was an offence and strictly enforced too. None raised any objection to it. So, my dear law enforcing whiz kids, ban the pillion riding and save many a family from becoming a destitute. You ban it anyway on certain religious and other occasions.  Why not do it for good.  Life is much more important than the pillion riding convenience afforded to a few.

Anyone listening?!!!

Cricket in Pakistan

 Cricket in Pakistan

The dismal performance of the Pakistani squad in the ongoing T20 world cup tournament in India has created a furore the like of which was never seen before. The entire nation and the media have gone bonkers and are discussing the issue day and night on all TV channels as if there was nothing else better to do.  All sorts of analyses, critiques and questions are being poured in by the so called experts of all hues and colours, ranks and standings some suggesting sacking of the captain and the coach, some cutting of the dead wood in the form of senior players and yet others guillotining the PCB bigwigs.  If you ask me, why not do away with the cricket itself in Pakistan?  After all what is there so imperative about it that we can’t do without it? Does it not cost us as a nation millions and millions of man hour watching the idiot box which could be utilized productively elsewhere? How does it contribute in any way in improving the health – mental or! physical – of the nation or for that matter even of the players?  It is complete waste of time and money except for the PCB and the good for nothing players who mint millions from the game and the commercials. It is no longer a sport but a commercial bonanza involving betting, match fixing and corruption. And imagine our children idolizing such characters devoid of any intellect, etiquette or good manners to the degree that most of them cannot  even utter a single sensible grammatically correct sentence, which they are seen trying pathetically clearly betrayed by their body language. After all how many nations of the world play cricket – one can count them on the fingers of one’s two hands?  Aren’t the rest of the scores of the countries – some highly advanced like Germany, Japan China, Russia, most of Europe surviving without it that we would not?  So, please let’s do away with it.  Our children will not have only more time! for their studies but also have the option to have men like I! qbal, DRs. Salam and Qadeer, Majors Raja Aziz Bhatti and Shabbir Sharif et al as their idols. Our offices will work better and with much more concentration. We will save on the electricity too which is already short.  A developing nation like ours cannot afford the luxury of wasting time and resources on cricket.  Let’s concentrate on other healthier sports instead.
