There is much hue and cry over Pakistani politician Alt​a​af Hussain’s arrest in London. But British MP, George Galloway, says in a DW interview that Hussain must pay the price for ‘his crimes.’ Altaf Hussain was arrested by the British police in London on Tuesday, June 3, on suspicion of money-laundering.

George Galloway, a British Member of Parliament, has been campaigning for Hussain’s arrest for many years. He even set up a fund to start a legal case against Hussain. In a DW interview, Galloway explains why he thinks Hussain should be sent back to Pakistan.
 
Deutsche Welle (DW): What were your initial reactions to Hussain’s arrest?
 
George Galloway: I was very happy that he had been arrested. At the same time, I feel sorry and fearful for the people of Karachi. The angry reaction to his detention in Hussain’s political stronghold Karachi is worrying. For a long time, I have been concerned about Hussain’s activities in London. I shared it with other members of the British parliament during the previous government. I told them that Altaf Hussain was Karachi’s godfather, who had been exercising his power from London to promote terrorism in his home country.
 
A year ago, I demanded that the government prosecute Altaf Hussain and said I would otherwise bring forth a private investigation. But the authorities ensured me that the police investigation of the MQM’s leader’s activities was serious and would lead to the kind of development we saw this week.
 
DW: Do you think the British police should have arrested him earlier?
 
GG: Yes. There is ample evidence of his crimes in every single speech he makes from London to Karachi via telephone. In his speeches, he incites violence and threatens his opponents openly. I wish the British authorities would have arrested him earlier.
 
DW: Hussain has been accused of much bigger crimes than money-laundering such as the murder of his aide Imran Farooq. Shouldn’t he have been arrested for these allegations?
 
GG: Well, the murder inquiry is ongoing. Don’t forget Al Capone, the American gangster – he was held on tax evasion charges, albeit he was involved in more serious crimes. The same is true for Altaf Hussain. I believe the murder inquiry may lead to charges against several people.
 
DW: What role did you play in Hussain’s arrest?
 
GG: The political pressure I exerted, particularly in the past year, created an atmosphere where the authorities became confident to take action.
 
DW: Why did you get involved in this in the first place?
 
GG: For the past two years, I have represented the Bradford West constituency in parliament. The area has tens of thousands of British citizens of Pakistani origin. Also, I have a long association with Pakistan. The Pakistani government has conferred two of the country’s highest civil awards on me. What happens in Pakistan matters to me. I am also concerned about the honor of my own country, and I believe that Britain did the wrong thing by harbouring Hussain.
 
DW: Why do you think Hussain should not be allowed to stay in the UK? He is a British citizen after all.
 
The British government changed the law for glass-eyed Islamic preacher Abu Hamza and it has the power to revoke people’s passports. They should do the same in Altaf Hussain’s case.
 
DW: Will the arrest have an impact on British-Pakistani relations?
 
GG: I think the majority of Pakistanis are happy that Hussain has been arrested. The political leadership, however, doesn’t feel the same, and people are questioning it in Pakistan. It is strange that Pakistan’s political parties, with the exception of Imran Khan’s Tehreek-i-Insaaf, have reacted sympathetically towards Altaf Hussain in the aftermath of his detention. Perhaps, some of them now fear that they might be next to be investigated by Britain for their enormous wealth in the UK.
 
DW: Is there a possibility that British authorities might release him because of diplomatic ties with Pakistan?
 
GG: No, now he is a British citizen and he must face charges under the British law for offences committed in Britain.
 
DW: Do you think Hussain’s arrest is the beginning of a long trial against him?
 
GG: Now when the authorities are able to question the Pakistani leader properly, I am confident that police will follow the proper legal procedure. The maximum penalty for money-launder​​ing in Britain is 14 years in prison.
 
DW: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on June 4 that Altaf Hussain’s arrest was a legal matter, and that his government was extending its “legal and moral assistance” to the detained leader. Have there been any attempts made by Islamabad to get him released? 
 
GG: The statement by Sharif is bizarre. It is sadly degrading for Pakistan that its premier made such a statement.

The request of British authorities to their Pakistani counterparts for handover of two suspects involved in a high-profile murder in London in 2010 has reportedly been accepted. This report could not be verified independently because everyone is tight-lipped on the issue. If it actually happens, it would seal the fate of a don-like political leader of Pakistani origin staying in London very soon. The dramatic developments of Sunday when the said politician tried to put pressure on Pakistani government not to heed to the request, his threats for doing away with Pakistan if he was arrested etc., are closely related to this development. It seems that the authorities in London are closing in on the said politician which he has termed as a conspiracy of “international establishment” to eliminate him.

The mystery associated with the gruesome murder of Dr. Imran Farooq, an estranged senior leader of Pakistan’s ethno-political party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), is being unveiled bit by bit. Although, people knew who could have ordered his murder in London nearly three years ago, the London Metropolitan Police was generally tight-lipped about the suspects. The alleged murderers were in the custody of Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies and, since MQM was in partner in the PPP government, were not inaccessible to the Met investigators. The developments in London released by media very cautiously, and without revealing the names, clearly suggested that MQM supremo, Altaf Hussain, a British national known for making fiery and threatening telephonic speeches from an Edgeware studio, was behind the murder. He was also perceived to be involved in money laundering of massive amounts. It is generally believed that money laundered consisted of extortion money collected by party goons from Karachi’s business community.

It was reported two years ago that the murders in Pakistani custody were committed by active members of Altaf’s assassin squad operating from South Africa. The squad, involved in target killing of cops, journalists and estranged workers, takes its orders directly from Altaf. Their handover to British authorities will enable the Met to close in on Altaf. He has gotten away with high-profile murders in Pakistan due to weak and corrupt political leadership but UK will be a tough government for him.

What will prove to be the proverbial last nail for MQM, is murders’ handover to Met. According to reports, British authorities have made a fresh demand to access key suspects in Dr. Imran Farooq murder case. The request was reported made at the top level and very few people were in knowledge of it because of the sensitivity of the issue. Recently, the London Metropolitan police paced up the investigations and has conducted several raids, arrested some eight suspects, questioned thousands of people and scanned through thousands of documents.

The Scotland Yard investigation into the murder in London of the leading Pakistani politician Dr Imran Farooq has been told that rows within his own party may have led to his assassination.

Farooq, 50, was stabbed to death earlier this month during an attack in which he was also beaten near his home in Edgware, north London. Farooq was a senior figure in Pakistan’s MQM (Muttahida Quami Movement) party, and was in exile in London at the time of his death. The murder is being investigated by Scotland Yard’s counter-terrorism branch because of the political dimension to the killing.

Sources say intelligence suggests his death was linked to rows within the MQM.

Farooq, once prominent in MQM, had taken a back seat. A senior Pakistani source said he may have been about to endorse or join a new party set up by Pakistan’s former military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf. The source said of the motive: “It lies within the MQM. Dr Farooq was probably going to join Musharraf.”He is vowing to leave his own London exile and return home to launch a fresh bid for power. His new party, the All Pakistan Muslim League, will launch its programme in London later this week.

Asked by the Sunday Telegraph about his reaction to Farooq’s murder, Musharraf said: “It is terrible that such an assassination could happen in a place like London.”

Farooq, who was married with two young sons, claimed UK asylum in 1999 alongside Altaf Hussain, the MQM’s leader. Hussain, who also lives in exile in London, has said “enemies of the MQM” killed Farooq and they will try to kill him. Pakistan’s media reported him as saying on Friday: “Now the enemies of the movement are after my life, but I want to tell them I am not afraid of anyone, whether it’s a superpower like the United States or its Nato allies or their Pakistani agents … I fear the Almighty Allah and will never bow down before the conspirators even if they get my British citizenship rescinded.”

Police in London are still hunting an attacker who, one witness said, appeared to be an Asian man. Analysts say the MQM has longstanding rivalries with ethnic Pashtun and Sindhi parties in Karachi. The MQM has also been riven by occasional internecine violence.

Before entering the UK, Farooq spent seven years on the run in Pakistan from criminal charges while the MQM was engaged in a violent battle for control of Karachi. He remained a key party figure. While MQM leader Hussain is protected by private guards and rarely appears in public following death threats, colleagues said Farooq never believed he was at risk and had played a smaller role in the party since the birth of his sons, now aged five and three.

Farooq was attacked on his way home from his job at a chemist’s shop. He was found near his home after neighbours witnessed what they believed was a fight. Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

MQM party officials in the party’s stronghold of Karachi declared a 10-day period of mourning. Previous political killings have triggered riots and deadly clashes between rival factions. Police are keeping an open mind as to the identity of Farooq’s killer and their investigation continues.

TORN apart by ethnic and political strife, Karachi has long been a tinderbox that can be set ablaze by the smallest of sparks. There is no shortage of antagonists in this city and the latest round of allegations can trigger a deadly chain reaction. It has often been said that Karachi is more cosmopolitan than any other major city in Pakistan. A patchwork and quite resplendent quilt, if you will, that had been carefully and harmoniously crafted over time but began falling apart at the seams in the mid-`80s. Since then we have seen peaceful pauses that are almost inevitably destroyed by the most horrible violence imaginable. Mohajir versus Sindhi nationalists, the security operation against the MQM, a short-lived spell of `activism` by the Punjabi Pakhtun Ittehad and then the out-and-out conflict between the MQM and the ANP that has rocked the city in recent years. Now yet another inflammatory ingredient has been tossed into the pot. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, which has parted ways with the Pakistan People`s Party, is clearly at loggerheads with the administration. Neither side has done itself any favours. Zulfiqar Mirza of the PPP seems bent on provocation. He almost boasted the other day that he met MQM-Haqiqi leader Afaq Ahmed, Muttahida`s primary foe, in jail. Is it becoming of a minister to have contact with a man who is, rightly or wrongly, accused of heinous crimes including murder? The government must act with greater restraint than its opponents. The MQM, for its part, has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging the government to take its pick: political negotiation or street combat. As messages go this one is quite clear, for it seems that both sides have taken polar positions that can only hurt the city further. The MQM`s statements come close to a threat of extreme violence. At the same time, the MQM ought to be asked whether a person like Aamir Khan, a former dissident who was until recently accused by the MQM of similar atrocities, should have been present at the press conference in which the Muttahida`s Anis Kaimkhani lambasted the PPP. Karachi has seen enough warfare and cannot afford another showdown. Too much blood has been spilled already, families devastated and livelihoods lost due to industrial shutdowns and a general fear factor that is crippling productivity. The numbers game cannot be played out in Sindh. The political situation here is far too complex than in other parts of the country and cannot be resolved without a joint effort. We need to learn how to live with ourselves. While the MQM has made no formal demand for a province, the graffiti-splattered walls in the city fuelled speculation that such a move was being considered by the party piqued by the government`s decision to scrap the local government system and restore the commissionerate system in Sindh. He is never been to Pakistan for more then 15 years but did travel to India on his British passport. For example, he claimed his supporters in Karachi increased by 10 million in just two years because he claimed to have 20 million supporters in an interview with Edgware Times in November 1998. But in 2001 MQM claimed to have 30 million supporters when MQM send a fax to Reuters on 22 September 2001. “(MQM leader) Altaf Hussain has offered the unconditional support of over 30 million MQM supporters to the U.S. president and the international community,” its London-based international secretariat said in a statement faxed to Reuters on September 22, 2001”.According to sources, ‘Altaf group is planning and preparing for armed fight with other groups in Karachi. There might be a plan to divide Karachi on ethnic zones as Rehman Malik mentioned in Dera Ismail Khan? The alleged transfer of money from Karachi to London, Germany, Dubai, South Africa, Canada, and United States is alarming. There reports of increase in the arms sale in Karachi seem serious but what are the authorities doing?So what is Altaf Hussain up to that is a crucial question to political and security leadership to think about. Crimes of Altaf Hussain and his party MQM are so heinous that he wouldn’t dare step in Karachi even the whole period of Musharraf and now Zardari rule?Until November 1998 Government of Pakistan was reportedly seeking extradition of Altaf Hussain who was said to be wanted in 50 murders and 150 cases of kidnapping and arson. He said in an interview with a newspaper in 1998, “It is my wish that they take me to trial in a British court then I will tell people nationally and internationally what has been happening in Pakistan.” It was Altaf Hussain and MQM who issued a memo to his workers saying,” if there was war between India and Pakistan, MQM workers will be remain neutral”. Why?MQM’s deputy chief organiser of district Thatta and his wife were arrested by the police for trafficking 120 kilos of A class drugs   according to a press report on 16th May 2004. Mohamed Ibrahim and his wife Ayesha Soho who is also member of district government were coming from Bolan area of Baluchistan on Jeep number BC 1248 when they were stopped by Dadar Police who discovered 180 kilos of HASH worth millions of from the secret compartments of the jeep. Police has registered a case number 13/2004 report against deputy chief of MQM and his wife for drug trafficking. Area in charge SHO of the area Police confirmed that suspects have confessed they have been also involved in arms trafficking from Kabul and been to Afghanistan three times. Both were sent to Sibi Jail in Baluchistan.“MQM has been funded with the drug money apart from the extortion money taken from the top businessmen in the name of support” according to a report published by The Frontier Post on December 25, 1998. The report says, “… What is more alarming is that the Narco dollars have been used for funding the (MQM), a responsible source in the provincial government said. He added that such funding was tantamount to fuelling terrorism.” Is the Narco-terror funding still on?By joining as local collaborator of Blackwater in Karachi MQM has provided the eyes and ears on the ground with smart guns. Even if US-India sponsored ‘Pakistani Taliban’ claim responsibility of Karachi Ashura bombings, the chemicals and smart guns used in burnings of the over 6000 small businesses and loss of Rs. 60 billion have all the hallmarks of Blackwater/Xe.“There is no difference between Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and MQM because both are sponsored by India and USA. LONDON: Both the London Metropolitan Police and UK High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson have confirmed receiving “floods” of complaints against Altaf Hussain, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, and the police say that an investigation was under way. The Metropolitan Police sources have confirmed thousands of calls from Pakistanis over Altaf Hussain’s remarks in relation to Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf’s sit-in at the Teen Talwar Chowk in Karachi, the alleged incitement of violence against protesters and threats to break up Pakistan.
 
The MQM has said that its leader’s words have been taken out of context by the party’s opponents but the unprecedented backlash continued over these remarks as calls and emails continued to come in from Britain, Pakistan and other countries, forcing the Metropolitan Police to issue a message to the callers not to use “Metropolitan Police’s international number for repeated reports of the same issue”. Speaking to The News, a police spokesman confirmed that the police were being contacted and that an investigation was under way against Altaf Hussain.
 
“Under British laws promoting hatred and violence is liableto punishment and Altaf Hussain’s statements must be taken seriously,” Thomson said, adding that London police were independent to investigate the complaints and were under no pressure from the UK government. This is for the first time that such a campaign has been initiated and it is believed that Imran Khan’s supporters, heavily active on social media and public forums, are behind this campaign after the tiff between the MQM and PTI started in Karachi over alleged vote-rigging in NA 250, forcing Altaf Hussain to intervene.
 
The reaction by Imran Khan’s supporters, educated, well-heeled and adept at using modern tools, may come as a big surprise to the MQM and is bound to make the MQM leadership rethink whether it’s advisable to get involved in such controversies and drag the party into of needless disputes.
 
Several other players have also jumped into the controversy calling on the British government to take notice of the alleged remarks of the MQM leader. Respected MP for Bradford West George Galloway called upon the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to “arrest a British citizen for incitement to murder. It is an open and shut case. You can watch his lips move on television, broadcast from London, in the wake of the controversial election count in the giant port city of Karachi, Pakistan. Hussain openly threatened the young democracy protesters agitating for a re-run of the election there that he would have them cut them down with swords”.
 
Galloway has also tabled questions to British Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May. Sajjad Karim Conservative MEP for the North West, told a European Parliament briefing that “extremist forces at work through genuine political actors who sat in Europe were able to issue threats to people in Pakistan by live satellite link”. Karim alleged that the leader of the MQM had issued “live direct threats to people that they will pay with their lives, unless certain actions were followed. And indeed,threatening the very existence of Pakistan as well”.
 
Habib Jan, Friends of Lyari International’s London-based leader, has also written to Home Secretary Theresa May MP requesting “action” over incitement to violence “against persons demonstrating peacefully against the rigging of the recent election by the MQM”. The MQM has always said that this group has links with Lyari criminal gangs.
