Sara Khan’s Inspire and Donald Trump up for Islamophobia awards By Saira Khan

Sara Khan of the so-called counter extremism organisation Inspire

Inspire’s Sara Khan, US presidential candidate Donald Trump, Channel 4 News reporter Cathy Newman and the BBC sitcom Citizen Khan are among the nominees for the 2016 Islamophobia awards.

The event on March 5 is organized by the Islamic Human Rights Commission and features a satirical awards ceremony where those who’ve been the most Islamophobic over the past year are rewarded for their efforts.

The event aims to subvert Islamophobia through comedy while simultaneously addressing a serious and significant issue in a creative manner.

The awards are split into four separate categories: UK, International, News/Media and Film/Book/TV Series. Nominees were submitted by the general public who had the chance to chose who they felt had displayed prominent symptoms of Islamophobia.

ISLAMOPHOBIA AWARDSFamiliar names crop up in the “UK” category with the likes of David Cameron and last year’s “Overall Islamophobe” winner Theresa May but there are new faces too with appearances by OFSTED head Michael Wilshaw and the “counter-extremism organisation” Inspire.

Reasons cited include Cameron’s alienating rhetoric, May’s police-state policies and Wilshaw’s suggestion to ban face veils in schools.

Nominees in the “International” category are literally spread across the globe with the inclusion of Burmese politicians Aung San Suu Kyi who has ignored the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya minority in the region; Republican candidates Donald Trump and Ben Carson who have both been comfortable attacking Muslims during their respective campaigns for president; and the government of Tajikistan where police have shaved nearly 13,000 people’s beards and closed more than 160 shops selling traditional Muslim clothing in the past year.

“News Media” features last year’s clear winner Fox News; Sky News’ Kay Burley for her easy and direct dismissal of the suggestion that what she was saying was both racist and Islamophobic; and journalist Cathy Newman for her infamous incident with an unfortunate South London mosque.

This year also sees numerous television series nominated in the “Book/Movie/TV” category as well as Glenn Beck’s latest book and the newly-released movie “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”

Winners will be highlighted during the spoof awards ceremony which will be taking place on Saturday, 5 March 2016 at The Clay Oven in Wembley. The ceremony will be accompanied by live entertainment and stand-up comedy.

The general public can purchase tickets here and they can vote for who wins here.

US Muslims Citizens Protect Your Rights : US Politicians Threw US Muslims Under the Bus

Did you see how politicians threw Muslims under the bus yet again?

Yesterday, Democrats staged a dramatic 16-hour sit-in on the House floor, following last week’s Senate 15-hour filibuster to force Republicans to vote on gun control. In the wake of the Orlando shooting which claimed 49 lives, it is refreshing to see lawmakers finally addressing the gun violence epidemic in the U.S. If only that were the case!

Unfortunately, the Democratic proposal fails to address the realities of gun violence and instead expands Islamophobic “War on Terror” policies that disproportionately target Arab and Muslim Americans. After four gun control bills died on the Senate floor last week—which called for sensible measures such as requiring individual background checks on all gun sales —the current bill House Democrats are fighting for bans assault weapon sales to individuals placed on the No Fly List which is almost exclusively Muslim.1

Rather than admitting they’re too weak to take on the NRA, politicians have once again scapegoated Muslims to score political points because they think they are too weak to push back. At United Voices, we’re working to change that.

This Ramadan, CAN WE COUNT ON YOU to make a Zakat-eligible donation to HELP US PUSH-BACK AGAINST anti-Muslim legislation and other efforts to marginalize our communities? CLICK TO DONATE.

Despite our knowledge of Omar Mateen’s background, elements of the media and government continue to focus on his Muslim identity and alleged ISIS affiliation—for which there has been no proven link.Politicians are now throwing around vague terms such as “potential terrorists,” a euphemism for Muslims, to whom gun sales must be blocked — despite that majority of mass shootings are carried out by White perpetrators.
According to the ACLU2, the danger of the “No Fly, No Buy” proposal lies in the unconstitutionality of the No Fly List—a complete civil rights disaster. This policy allows the government to place Americans “who have never been charged let alone convicted of a crime” on a no-fly blacklist based on an unidentified threat “which may or may not occur.” Currently, close to 800,000 people have been placed on this error-prone list–most of whom are Muslim–which lacks due process and/or recourse to challenge one’s designation.3
Once again, lawmakers are throwing Muslim Americans under the bus because they know our communities are vulnerable and think we won’t fight back.
This blessed month, will you donate $500, $250, $100 or any other amount to help us stand up for ourselves and push-back against political scapegoating? Every dollar helps and donations are zakat-eligible
To donate visit: http://unitedvoices.com/ramadan
Donations are tax-deductible, our tax id is 26-3167994

If you prefer to mail a check, please make it payable to “United Voices and send it to 1775 Eye Street NW, Suite 1150, Washington, DC 20006.

Let’s work together to demand that our elected officials actually fight for the victims, take on the gun lobby, and advocate for genuine reform instead of fueling the further backlash against Muslims.

Thanks so much for your continued support.

Fallout from Donald Trump’s Anti-Muslim Campaign in the US?

Nearly 200 Muslim employees were removed from their jobs for offering Friday prayers in the American state of Colorado. According to U.S. media, the administration of a meat processing factory took this step upon learning that factory workers had gone to offer Friday prayers. The workers — from Somalia and other countries — who had gone to offer Friday prayers, were prevented from re-entering the factory. It appears that the hate-rousing campaign against Muslims launched by U.S. presidential candidate, Donald Trump, is starting to show its effects now.

Muslims residing in different places throughout the U.S. all offer Friday prayers and, in most places, are facilitated in this by the government and the police. So much so, that even double parking is allowed outside mosques at the time of Friday prayers — something that is generally never allowed. This suggests that the factory owner’s orders were given on account of some current provocation. It is possible that he is a supporter of Trump. Knowing it is unlikely that Trump will become president, he sought to punish Muslims for offering Friday prayers as a means of implementing Trump’s anti-Muslim views.

Praying at prescribed times is binding on Muslims and the blessed Friday prayers have to be offered in a mosque. These Muslims sacrificed their jobs for the sake of their religious duties. Now Muslims must unite to prepare some framework for dealing with the situation.

The Holy Quran Experiment

The Holy Quran Experiment: What happens when people are quoted verses from a Holy Book

The Islam has been under huge scrutiny lately and is often criticised for being an aggressive religion… but what about Christianity?
In this video we disguised a Bible as a Quran and read some of it’s most gruesome verses to the people. This is what they had to say.

Two guys from the Netherlands disguised a Bible as a Quran and read some of its most gruesome verses to the people. What they had to say is eye-opening.

Bible-quran_759_theheathensguideAs part of a social experiment, Sacha Harland and Alexander Spoor disguised a Bible as a Quran and read some of its most gruesome verses to the people.

We currently live in turbulent times, when the people are quick to judge against each other, actions are carried out without thought and every day there are a number of news stories on bombings and shootings in the name of religion.

The most ‘convenient’ target for the world, the fight against terrorism, has been, and continues to be, Islam and its teachings. Statements from terrorist groups such as the Islamic State (ISIS) have made things worse. After the attack in Paris, two guys from the Netherlands — Sacha Harland and Alexander Spoor — decided to run an experiment. As an on-ground report, the duo went about quoting passages from a holy book, recording people’s reaction. The end is most fascinating.

This is what they had to say as an introduction to their experiment: “Islam has been under huge scrutiny lately and is often criticised for being an aggressive religion… but what about Christianity? In this video, we disguised a Bible as a Quran and read some of its most gruesome verses to the people. This is what they had to say.”

Watch the video here.

The duo quoted passages like, “If you reject my commands and abhor my laws, you will eat the flesh of your own sons, and the flesh of your own daughters”, “I will not allow for a woman to teach… you will have to cut off her hands”, among others.

The participants, unaware that the book being quoted is actually the Bible, react very strongly, with one saying, “How could one believe in this? That’s unbelievable to me.” Comparing the Bible and the Quran, one man said, “The Bible is a lot less harsh and a bit more peaceful.” When the truth was revealed, most stepped back in shock, unable to digest the news that the very ‘Western’ religion they belonged to actually propounded these teachings.

One man actually went ahead to acknowledge, “It’s all prejudice really. I try not to be prejudiced myself but apparently I already am.”

The video, ‘The Holy Quran Experiment’, has been viewed over 2.5 million times since it was uploaded on December 4, 2015.

This is not the first time they’ve done an experiment like this under the Youtube channel Dit Is Normaal. Every week the duo “travel to a city in the Netherlands and ask its citizens the most challenging, interesting, strange questions”.

How do people perceive Bible verses if they think they’re coming from the Quran?

Dutch YouTube duo Dit Is Normaal decided to conducted a social experiment following the attacks in Paris to dispel misconceptions about Islam. They disguised a Bible as a Quran, and then went out onto the streets of the Netherlands to ask people about certain verses from it.

The pair chose specific Biblical passages that are far out of touch with modern Western culture, and they read them out loud to passerby, pretending they were reading from the Quran. People said the readings were “aggressive,” while they described the Bible as “more peaceful” and “positive.” The shock was palpable when they found out the verses they had just heard were actually part of the Christian holy text.

“Our experiment was a way to highlight our prejudice as a society about Islam, one that has been fed to us through mass media over the past couple of years,” Alexander Spoor of Dit Is Normaal wrote to The Huffington Post in an email Monday. “The responses we got from the people on the streets were interesting, but not surprising. The outcome of this experiment pretty much proved our hypothesis to be correct. The responses we’ve been getting from people online are slightly surprising, though. We’ve received so many messages of thankfulness from Muslims from all over the world for making this video. It’s been quite incredible.”
