Handle Balochistan politically: Imran Khan

Published: April 23, 2012

Imran says a general can make PML-N or form political alliance, but he can’t bring a tsunami.

The only solution to the Balochistan issue is a political one, not a military one, said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Sunday.

While talking to the media at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Imran said that PTI’s recent public gathering in Quetta has “broken the silence of fear” in the province, adding that the incumbent provincial assembly and cabinet are not the real representatives of the people of Balochistan.

He also challenged President Asif Ali Zardari and chief of his own faction of the Pakistan Muslim League, Nawaz Sharif, to engage with the public in Balochistan if they really believed in addressing the grievances of the Baloch people.

Expressing satisfaction with his rally in Quetta, Imran said, “A general can make PML-N or form a political alliance like Islami Jamhoori Ithehad (IJI) but he can’t bring a tsunami.”

He added that critics of the PTI, who claim that his popularity was manipulated by former ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha, should not forget the party’s moot in Quetta, saying that no mainstream political force dared to hold a public gathering in the volatile province.

While commenting on the issue of troops’ withdrawal from Siachen, he said that both India and Pakistan should withdraw at the same time.

Attacking the incumbent government, Imran said the prime minister wanted to become a political martyr to save “the thieves” and did not want to implement the Supreme Court’s verdicts, referring specifically to an accused in the rental power projects case being made a federal minister.

Falling Chairs

Falling Chairs
Humayun Gauhar

As President Zardari stood up clumsily to deliver his annual address
to parliament his chair fell. His sage said it was a bad omen –
“Beware the ides of March” and all that jazz – for ‘The Chair’ is akin
to a throne, symbolizing power and office. “You will have to pray at
the shrine of a Sufi much bigger than any we have in Pakistan,” the
sage declared. So Zardari decided to go to the biggest South Asian
Sufi of them all, Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti (1141-1230 CE), whose
shrine is in city of Ajmer in India.

Many kings, presidents and prime ministers have gone to Ajmer.

Emperor Akbar is said to have gone to Ajmer to pray for a son.
Some say it was to a Sufi in Sheikhupura, I forget his name, but
that is another story. Either way, Akbar got a son and successor
from his Hindu Rajput wife and the Mughal dynasty continued.

The official reason for Zardari’s visit was that he went to honour

his late wife’s promise or ‘mannat’ to the pir, but the talk in the
bazaars is that it was the ‘bad omen’ that triggered it off. It could
have been both. Should it matter?

Yes it should, because the Pakistani state, ergo the people, must have
paid for some part of the visit, even though it is said that the
president paid for everything from his own pocket, including the one
million US dollar offering he gave to the shrine. Fine, but the
questions then arises: from where did he get so much money? Best to
leave it to the judges of our highest exalted court – the ‘Supreme’
one that is – to take suo moto notice. I don’t know how Muslims can
call any court ‘supreme’ and that too in an Islamic state since in
Islam only the court of God is supreme because only God is supreme

and sovereign. That’s yet another discussion. No one will object
because our people, particularly of Sindh and southern Punjab, have
a proclivity to go to Sufis dead or alive for blessings and intercession
with the Almighty. That in Islam no one can intercede with God on
anyone’s behalf is forgotten. And – you guessed it – that’s yet
another discussion.

So off our president went with son, daughter, sage, ministers,
sycophants, journalists, media and staff in tow, enough to require

two aircraft, one executive jet (wonder which anointed ones got to sit in
that one with the ‘royal’ family) and an army C-130, the type in which
this ‘royal’ family’s nemesis General Zia ul Haq crashed and perished
with many others. That particular aircraft, legend has it, was the
same that transported Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s dead body half way to his
ancestral graveyard in Sindh before returning to Rawalpindi halfway
with engine trouble and the body had to be shifted to another C-130.
Not that it means anything; else the sage wouldn’t have kept quiet. By
the way, such is our attraction for graves that Bhutto’s mausoleum has
become another saintly shrine. Why do you think that some Muslims
level them off every few years?

It was good that Zardari’s private visit included a ‘sumptuous’
semi-official lunch with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Not
that a constitutionally ceremonial president and a weak proxy prime
minister amount to much in this land of dynastic rule with the fig
leaf of British parliamentary democracy. But it is precisely because
of dynasty that Zardari wields real power, being Bhutto’s son-in-law
and co-chairman of his party, with his young son the chairman and icon
of the Bhutto cult, a symbolic figurehead so far. As for Mr. Singh,
real power lies with the daughter-in-law of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty
who is also the leader of the ruling party. No matter: jaw-jaw is
better than war-war a la Churchill.

Be all that as it may, our media’s hysterical hoopla that accompanied
the visit last Sunday was shameful. So obsessed was it with Zardari’s
lunch and pilgrimage that it callously paid scant attention to the
worst peacetime tragedy our army has ever faced when 135 of soldiers
were buried alive in an avalanche in Siachen. The two oldest
civilizations in the world have been at each other’s throats for 28
years in what is called the “highest war in the world”. Stupid. Both
have lost more soldiers to the elements there than to bullets. It’s
about geo-strategy and water. To get news about the Siachen tragedy

we had to turn to foreign channels. Shows how wonky priorities can get
when the collective mind is wonky: the difference between right and
wrong, relevant and irrelevant or less relevant is lost.

Our media went overboard on the visit because we as a people are
merrily unaware of where the limits of respect for state office end
and the courtier’s pathological sycophancy begins; of where
constructive criticism ends and national damage begins. There was
daydreaming galore by anchors, clapped out ambassadors, bureaucrats
gone to seed, generals put out to pasture, all masquerading as
analysts, most in awe of America, many members of the Langley Club

or on its waiting list.

That the Supreme Commander of our Armed Forces chose to go to

India in the face of this enormous tragedy was of no consequence
to him or to our media. Symbolism is an important balm for broken
hearts and destroyed lives, more, dare I suggest, than the symbolism
of a spiritual pilgramage. Would the great Sufi of Ajmer have missed
Zardari’s presence? Would he have any use for the one million US
dollars offering? Only his progeny would. Custody of shrines by
progeny is a booming business because illiterate, desperately poor
and helpless devotees can go there for, if nothing else, therapy of a
soul in turmoil, even if they know that only God can answer prayers
and that the piety that lay with the Sufi did not enter his genes to be
passed on to his descendants. In Zardari’s mind – and he is our best
political tactician, mind you – the symbolism of his pilgrimage to
Ajmer would hold importance with Sindhi voters, what with elections
looming.

Shrines often become political constituencies of Sufi progeny whose
habits their exalted forebear would have looked at askance. Their
graves are where the credibility and constituencies of ‘Mukhdooms’

or custodians lie. It’s as primitive and predatory as feudalism and
tribalism since all three societal forms prey upon the illiteracy,
poverty and helplessness of the hapless. Pathetic. Sufis are people
of peace, of love, of poetry and sometimes of trance and dance,
which is why the ascetic disapproves of them.

Only those who cannot see God with their inner eye, in their hearts
and in His creations pray to mortals or ask them to intercede with
Him. Human beings find it difficult to think in the abstract. Go to
mausoleums, certainly, because very pious and God-loving people

used to live there, but don’t imagine that they can do for you that
which only God can do. Genuine Sufis and mystics were incredible
people for they saw beyond logic and came to their deductions
through feeling with the mind and thinking with the heart. But
their followers and adherents don’t understand this and ascribe
to them and their progeny qualities that only God has. Here I go
drifting off into another subject.

Moinuddin Chishti is regarded as the greatest Sufi of the subcontinent
for helping people, which is why is called ‘gharib nawaz’ or helper of
the poor. The fire of the huge cauldron in which food is cooked and
distributed free has been alight for centuries. It takes a ladder to
get to its lip.

Back to the visit: Pakistan wants to be seen to be trying to improve
relations with India, if for nothing else than to score brownie points
with America. India has had the bad habit of linking disparate issues,
particularly terrorism with everything. But now it seems that it is
breaking that habit. India should remember that it is state terrorism
that begets non-state terrorism. I will not say more. No point in
laboring the obvious. America and India shouldn’t forget that no
country in the world has suffered more at the hands of homegrown

and foreign terrorism than Pakistan has and no country has lost
more soldiers and civilians in fighting terrorists. Good luck. Peace
is better than war.

Pasha Tells Memo Commission There was no Plan of Army Coup

Former DG ISI Shuja Pasha informed the memo commission that there was no plan of a coup by the Army after the May 02 covert US raid in Abbottabad. “If there was a threat, the ISI would have known about,” Pasha said.

While recording his testimony, Shuja Pasha said he consulted only the military leadership after coming to know about Marsoor Ijaz’s article in the Financial Times. “I wanted to know about the author of the memo and directed a source in the ISI to contact Mansoor who agreed to meet me and share details but outside Pakistan and the US.”

As the military top brass had asked me to go ahead, the meeting was arranged in a London hotel on October 22, 2011 which lasted for four hours, Shuja told the commission. It is pertinent to mention here that the former spy chief was attending the proceedings of the commission for the first time.

The judicial commission, probing the memo scandal resumed hearing after getting another six weeks extension from the Supreme Court.

The commission comprises of Chief Justice Balochistan High Court, Justice Qazi Faez Issa, Chief Justice Sindh High Court, Justice Musheer Alam and Chief Justice Islamabad High Court, Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman.

Former DG ISI Shuja Pasha, Husain Haqqani’s counsel Zahid Bukhari, Mansoor Ijaz’s lawyer Akram Sheikh and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik were also present during the proceedings.

Husain Haqqani cited a heart problem as the reason for his absence from proceedings.

The former ambassador is also waiting for the outcome of his application pending before the SC regarding the recording of his statement through a video link from London.

Haqqani, through his application, has told the commission that he has been a heart patient for the last three years and has been under treatment at the Advanced Cardiology Center, Maryland, US. The applicant is currently under treatment for chest pain/coronary artery disease.

US Dirty Tricks & Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline

Pakistan has issued tender for laying kilometers Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline in its territory to a German company while rejecting US Pressure over Iran-Pakistan Gas line Project. According to the secretary petroleum, Pakistan has offered $250 million to a German company, ILF Engineering, for laying the gas pipeline inside its territory. The 2,775-kilometre (1,724 mi) pipeline which started from Asalouyeh while passing though Balochistan and Sind would end up in Multan area by 2014. Major length of 1,172 kilometers (728 mi) passes through Iran. Tehran has already completed a 900-km portion of 56-inch diameter pipeline from Assaluyeh to Iran Shehr. However remaining 200 km up to the Pakistan border is under design, and is expected to be completed in next two years time. According to the governments of Pakistan, sources the project implementation and construction is targeted in four years and the first gas flow will be available by the end of December 2014. The 750 mmcfd gas volume will help in generation of around 4,000 MW electricity couple with more job opportunities in backward areas of Balochistan and Sindh.

Notably, Pakistan is to lay 781 km pipeline in its territory and the project would be completed by December 2014. The initial capacity of the pipeline will be 22 billion cubic meters of natural gas per annum, which is expected to later rise to 55 billion cubic meters. The pipeline aims to export 21.5 million cubic meters of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan every day or 8.7 billion cubic meters per year.

It is mentionable that initially the project was pursued through a trilateral approach by Pakistan, Iran and India till in 2009 when India took a back seat when USA offered her an alternative source of energy by access to civil nuclear technology in lieu of the pipeline. Since 2009, the project has been pursued bilaterally between Pakistan and Iran and as of March 2012, it has made important headway and the pipeline to Pakistan is now scheduled to be completed by December 2014. Gas demand in Pakistan has meanwhile increased to a level that even full capacity of the pipeline would barely meet it in 2015.

To malice Iran, the United States asked Pakistan in January 2010, to abandon the project. In return it offered assistance for a liquefied natural gas terminal and promised to aid the import of electricity from Tajkistan through Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor. But Pakistan rejected the US pressure and finalized the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline deal in June 2010. And in July 2011, Iran announced that it had completed construction of its section. Because now it is Pakistan’s turn to move ahead, the United States has once again become active and has put the spanner in the works with its old formula.

U.S. has started playing her dirty tricks against Iran and Pakistan since inception of IP Gas Pipeline project. US, Israel and India covertly floated the idea of “Greater Balochistan”, threatened attacking of Iran, imposing sanctions on Pakistan and Iran. CIA, RAW, Mossad and MI-6 jointly launched militancy in Balochistan and started assisting and funding anti state Baloch lords.   In this connection, US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter last year visited   Balochistan and his November statement to year, US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter, in a statement to Press TV, repeated the old refrain, saying, “Pak-Iran gas pipeline is not a good idea….However, the plan to get gas from Turkmenistan is a better idea.”

Again, on February 8, 2012, The United States (US) Congress Committee on Foreign Affairs while discussing situation of Balochistan opposed its emancipation but shown concern over security problem and killing of the people. In this meeting, a Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, has expressed concern over Balochistan saying that it is an insurgency hit area? He said that this province has vital strategic importance. Later on U.S. Foreign sectary Mr. Hilary Clinton also showed her concern over Balochistan Issue and IP Gas Pipeline Project. She also threatened Pakistan while stating that Pakistan should be ready to face sanctions in case of final materialization of the project. In response while addressing to media, foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit responded on February 8, 2012 and said Pakistan had conveyed its reservations to the US in Islamabad and Washington regarding the talks on Balochistan by the US Congress. In a question he also very rightly sent a clear message to Washington that “Pak-Iran gas pipeline project was not abandoned and it would be completed till 2014.”

However, President, Prime Minister, all provincial parliaments and national leaders unanimously rejected U.S. pressure and in a   clear tone mentioned that Islamabad will not accept any dictation regarding its internal affairs from any foreign country, adding that exporting gas from Iran is in the country’s best interest. In this regard Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that Pakistan will take decision on Pak-Iran gas pipeline keeping in view its own interests and would not succumb to any pressure in this regard. Speaking at a ceremony after inauguration of the Air University campus here on Saturday, Gilani said Pakistan would build ties with other countries including Iran keeping in view its own interests. He said that the country would not budge to foreign pressure as it had an elected government.

Anyhow above mentioned debate very clear indicate that Pakis ready to face all consequences for the completion of Gas pipeline project Iran also realized the pressure over Islamabad and offered assistance of resources and many to bounce back American move over the project. In this connection Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr. Asim Hussain has said that Iran has agreed to export 80,000 barrels of crude oil annually to Pakistan and has also agreed to provide $250 million for the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

Unfortunately, Pakistan and Iran has wasted lot of time to built and complete the project because of American interference and non serious Indian attitude towards the Gas Pipeline project. Opposing  of  said  project by the Americans is not justify since Pakistan is an independent sovereign country that has to look after her regional interest and why she should give preference to US over its own interests. Simply, I would like to say that if American’s leadership is unable to scarify her interest with India over Kashmir issue then why US should be accepting from Pakistan to forego her interests because of Americans. Here I would also say that UN is only looking after major power interests and directly and indirectly imposed sanctions over Iran because of that nuclear programme which has not yet produced any nuclear arsenal. US and some of her western allies have also tried to line up the Arab States in the Gulf as well as Saudi Arabia against Iran. Recently, speaking before a critical White House showdown with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, Mr. Obama tried to buy more time for “crippling sanctions” against Tehran to take effect before Israel decides to strike its nuclear facilities. He also stated that “Iran’s leaders should know that I do not have a policy of containment but so have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon”. He also stressed that a nuclear-armed Iran also threatened American and Israeli security. Therefore America will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the United States and its interests.

In short, opposition to the Pak-Iran Gas pipeline is just another attempt to “strangulate” Pak-Iran’s economies and blackmailing Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran while carrying out militancy in Balochistan. Nevertheless, Pakistan and Iran should stand fast for their national interests. Both Pakistan and Iran should also try to attract China for becoming part of under progress project that can directly play an important role in resolving their energy and economic crisis. At the same time, American’s top brass should know that already depreciating Pak-US relationship would further deteriorate in case of continuity of US dirty tricks against Pak and Iran. At the end I appreciate the government that they have rejected US threats to stop Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline.

On the Brink of Third World War—2012

2012 onwards, the world is on the brink of Third World War. All sane and peace loving men would pray and strive that it is averted. For the horoscope of the times point towards a global catastrophe in the making. The guns of August 1914 – 1st World War paled in front of the Panzer Blitzkrieg of September 1939 Second World War. The Third World War during Cold War was averted between NATO and Warsaw Pact Forces. If war breaks out in 2012 onwards, Nukes shall speak and tragically billions may die. If there is war, it will most likely spread to be global plus nuclear, and without method in the madness. This apocalyptic scenario may yet come to pass, unless it is stopped in its tracks.

Opposing Alliances. US globalists (left over Neocons, Military – Industrial complex and their ilk) led NATO still want to dominate the world (despite their disaster in Iraq – Afghanistan). It is not only that the Western World’s global dominance stands challenged, but the march of history may be reversed. From the 1500’s (seafaring age) scientific discoveries, industrialization, political revolutions, colonialism, and technology ascendency, the world has been controlled by western powers. British Empire, Napoleon’s France, Hitler’s Germany and more recently USA have all been part of the Western world’s bid for global hegemony or control. Now the west is really in decline. USA the great power, land of mass production faces economic stagnation if not full decline. EU faces its own economic predicament. Some Europeans and Americans find the idea of a powerful Germany leading Europe (a natural process) as unacceptable so far. Two World Wars were fought among other reasons to prevent Germany from its rightful place under the sun. An Intra European conflict may be brewing for leadership of Europe. Even as US – NATO alliance conflicts with the dialectic alliance Russia – China.

US Geo strategy has been embroiled in Afghanistan and Iraq, but now seeks to extend the war to Iran – Pakistan. Of course the real war is against Russia – China, the opposing alliance. Washington sees China rising (US trying to contain it from Pacific to Indian Ocean) Russia resurgent, Islamic world defiant (with Arab Spring likely to turn Anti west,) Israel endangered, besides Western economic decline.

American politics for 2012 and the Presidential Elections are upping the war ante (forcing President Obama to strike Iran or support Israel in doing so) or risk losing his reelection. Delhi seeks US Power to denuke, balkanize, deIslamize Pakistan, before US departure from Afghanistan region. Israel is straining on the leash before Iran develops the Nuclear Arsenal. This will change the strategic balance followed by Nuclear Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt etc.

In Afghanistan US seeks to retain a (25000 strong force) SOF/Air Force for denuclearization of Iran – Pakistan. It may seek independence of Baluchistan (with Indian support.) A clash with Pakistan is likely though not inevitable. Delhi wants to use American Power to fight Pakistan (but absurdly believes it can escape the nuclear conflagration). The war with Iran is even nearer 2012. US – NATO may attack Iran followed by Pakistan or both together. An Israeli attack on Iran is even more likely and Indian attack on Pakistan (Cold Start) always remains a possibility.

Russia – China are Allies against US – NATO Geo strategy (Iran and Pakistan are joining this alliance but also the Battle Space.) China is rising economically, Russia is resurgent strategically. After Iraq, Afghanistan, they have seen Libya humbled by NATO power. The US –NATO model  of regime change by sponsoring local militants – Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, in Libya (NATO trained anti Gaddafi Rebels), Syria (Syrian Rebels plus ex Libyan Rebels ) In Iran (non Persian ethnic groups, anti regime Diaspora ) in Pakistan (instead of regime change, keeping pliant puppets in power, or sponsoring  Baluch rebels against Pakistan.) In Russia, President Putin himself has accused the US of instigating opponents of United Russia. In China, using India for fermenting trouble in Xinjiang, Tibet etc. All this is unifying the alliance of Heart land powers Russia –China and critical Rim land state actors Iran – Pakistan into an Anti US – NATO alliance. But events are moving too fast. The Mayan Prophesy of 2012 catastrophic year approaches. US – NATO-India clash with Pakistan or US – NATO- Israel clash with Iran will lead by default or design to multi regional war going Global.

The combined Geopolitical space of Pakistan – Afghanistan –Iran – Iraq (backed by) Russia – China is beyond the US – NATO reach (It has already over reached) Putin’s reported warning to his generals, ‘Prepare for Armageddon’, must   be taken seriously. Putin is a great leader in the tradition of Russian History. China has already alerted its Navy in the Pacific. North Korea can always do the unpredictable, more so now with the young Kim in power!

US – NATO war against Iran could be catastrophic, but against Pakistan it could be dooms day! US – NATO may have Turkish/Saudi support against Syria but in Pakistan’s case both Saudi Arabia – Turkey will support Pakistan. In fact War against Pakistan is very complicated plus suicidal!

Firstly Pakistan is neither threatening nor attacking anybody. It is on high moral ground, despite US – propaganda on militants to nuke insecurity!

Secondly Pakistan will be defended by its Soldiers and People. (190 million despite US – Indian attempts to divide them on different lines).

Thirdly Pakistan will defend itself at any level – sub conventional (asymmetrical), conventional (armed forces) above conventional (nuclear –WMD)

Fourthly There will be no foreign inspired civil war in Pakistan. Pakistanis are united to defend the mother land. Even militants are on the wane or will fight foreign invaders. A few Baluch rebels are being instigated by Delhi – Neocons. (The Baluch should be appeased by Islamabad). All major and minor political parties and people want an end to the Afghan War and peace in Pakistan.

Fifthly Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia will support Pakistan even for different Geopolitical reasons.

Sixthly A low intensity war in Geopolitical black hole of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq will defeat US – NATO (with war weary public, declining economy at home). A perfect catastrophe! A conventional war, more so on two fronts for Pakistan (US – NATO strike in the west, and Indian Cold Start in the east) will quickly reach nuclear threshold. If Pakistan is being destroyed by enemy fire power plus nukes it will strike back into India and attacking forces / region. Loose nukes from a destroyed Pakistan could explode in Israel – western cities leading to a nuclear retaliation chain cycle. The war going Global, nuclear destructive and radioactive. The Russian view that attack on Pakistan with lead to Thermonuclear War was in this context.

A war the US led NATO cannot win. With hundreds of millions or billions dead only a sick, demented man could term it as a victory. The real winner of the Second World War was USA whose homeland was untouched, and rose to become the sole super power. If there are any victors, it would be Russia – China unless the war involves them directly (something which the globalists hope to achieve – lure Russia – China by attacking Iran).

The Arab Spring – Muslim World would revolt in Anti Americanism as war with Iran – Pakistan and carnage becomes apparent. The western homeland and initiators of attack will be burnt by the flames they help ignite themselves (albeit radioactive fires).

It is near midnight. Geopolitics of Peace is the solution. The US – NATO must relent on Afghanistan, of course no war with Iran and no interference in Baluchistan. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

Besides the innocent people of Iran and Pakistan, the cultured people in Europe and good hearted, charity giving, amiable folks in USA are being duped by their Neocons and hawks plus globalists. Shocked when the bastion of capitalism, Wall Street came under siege and fearing rapid collapse, war abroad is their illogical choice. Even in Israel, half the population is against the coming war. Over all the good Jewish people, with their historical sense of survival seek peace and security. Pakistan is not anti Semitic at all, but has deep sympathy with people in Palestine. Still peace in the Middle East would be welcome to all. The American globalists however are adamant to drive the American Titanic into the global iceberg. But this war will be self defeating for all.

A new paradigm shift is needed, rather than beating the drums of war. Moscow under President Putin has a great role to deter the American war hawks, aided by the peace loving Chinese. The Germans and other anti war Europeans, besides the good people of USA must join hands to abort this global conflagration. Russia’s key role in global peace, security for Israel, no attack on Iran, establishment of Palestine State, US – NATO exodus from Afghanistan, no interference in Baluchistan, return of Kashmir to Pakistan, US – China amity, all have to be part of Geopolitical peacemaking and war avoidance.

The alternative global nuclear war is too apocalyptic to contemplate.
